INsiders Guide: Trophy Wives, Annie Dressner, Kayla DiVenere, HUMANE THE MOON, Kitty Coen, Darryl Kissick, Charlie Burg…

Trophy Wives is a new music project that finds itself at the intersection of tropical, western, and pop music. The group is fronted by two Los Angeles native queer artists and best friends, Rock and Luca, in collaboration with producers Dan Reynolds and Wayne Sermon from Imagine Dragons to create their genre-defying sound. Their unique blend of tropical rhythms and western influences will transport listeners to a wild west oasis where the good vibes never stop. Rock and Luca infuse their music with the importance of authenticity, which is a direct reflection of their journey to self-discovery. Trophy Wives wants nothing more than for their audience to embrace their individuality and dance their asses off!

On her stunning new single ‘Black and White’, out 13th October via Dharma Records, NYC singer-songwriter Annie Dressner contemplates long-gone heartbreak and distant memories.

Songwriting stalwart Annie Dressner has been releasing music since her 2011 debut album Strangers Who Knew Each Other’s Names and, following her move to Cambridge, has become a regular name on the UK touring and festival circuit. Demonstrating a knack for rich storytelling, mesmerizing melodies, and lyrics that cut straight to the heart, her new single ‘Black and White’ (out 13th October) showcases this flawlessly, containing a mesmerizing musicality to convey a wealth of history between two people, stirring up old feelings. With her life acting as a canvas on which to paint her experiences, Annie’s music resonates with an NYC flair to tell these stories.

Speaking on the track, Annie explains: “I wrote this song after an encounter with an ex that I had not seen in a decade. It was almost as if no time had passed. I always felt really sad that he would no longer be in my life as he meant a lot to me as a friend, and I often thought that ‘the thing that made me the saddest is I wanted to know you…’.

I wrote this song as a reaction to our recent conversation, and I guess I didn’t know how to say it to their face in words, but I’ve said it here and I hope that if they ever hear it, they know I still care and mostly remember the good stuff.

Born and bred in the heart of NYC, Annie picked up her family’s guitar for the very first time on the night of her high school graduation, and discovered a hidden passion that would change her life. Inspired by icons like Simon & GarfunkelCarly Simon, and Ben Kweller, she began crafting her own melodies, often humming her thoughts like a secret soundtrack to city life.

Annie’s artistic odyssey led her to countless open mic nights in the bustling streets of New York, which became her training ground, cultivating not only her craft but also a vibrant community of fellow songwriters and musicians. She eventually played her debut solo show at legendary NYC venue The Bitter End in 2008, and thereafter began collaborating with the likes of David Ford (formerly of Easyworld)Polly Paulusma, and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf).

Her music over the years has been played on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6Music, and has seen press support from titles such as American SongwriterPaste MagazineFolk Radio UK and AmericanaUK, while gaining a nomination for Female Artist of the Year from FATEA. She has graced the stages of multiple UK festivals, including the Green Man FestivalCambridge Folk FestivalBlack Deer FestivalSecret Garden Party and Manchester Folk Festival. With hundreds of gigs under her belt, sharing stages with the likes of EchobellyEmily Barker and Simone Felice, Annie will soon be heading out on tour around the UK, including a wealth of shows as support for The Trials of Cato, full dates below.

multi-talented artist Kayla DiVenere presents her new single, “Date Myself,” out on Sound Factory Records. With her new tracks – “Date Myself” and “Jumping the Gun” – Kayla showcases a more mature and intentional alt-leaning pop sound. At just 19-years-old, her catchy yet introspective lyrics perfectly capture the highs and lows of young adulthood.

On “Date Myself,” Kayla vents her frustrations with modern dating culture and all the disappointments that come with it. “Writing ‘Date Myself’ reminded me of how beautiful it is to spend time by yourself, and how important it is to be comfortable owning your high standards and loving yourself,” she says. “Being able to hear the song back after writing it and screaming it at the top of my lungs has comforted me more than any guy has, and I hope it can comfort people who relate to it too.”

Hailing from Montreal and now based in Los Angeles, Kayla DiVenere’s penchant for the arts has been apparent from a very young age. She started acting at the age of six (Love Victor, Law & Order, Light as a Feather) and is now proving herself as a true double threat with a slew of captivating singles. With over a million cumulative streams across just a handful of singles, as well as 200K social followers, there’s no doubt that Kayla DiVenere is an exciting young artist to keep an eye on.

On the next single to come from his forthcoming EP ‘Mythomania’, coming later this year, Humane The Moon continues to deliver grunge-tinged indie tunes with pounding new anthem ‘Ozymandias’.

Soaked in a blend of fuzzy instrumentalisation and gritty vocals targeted towards the underground London grunge scene, Humane The Moon’s latest offering injects the world of modern alternative music with a fresh and revived spirit, unmissable for fans of Bloc Party and King Krule.

Give ‘Ozymandias’ a spin here

Astonishingly only on his third track to date, the solid, cohesive sound and style that Humane The Moon has formed over the course of his three single releases, gives the impression that making music that is an extension of himself is second nature to him. Projecting his deep-toned, East London accent, he is actively firing up the London grunge scene with music totally unique to his multidimensional sound.

Taken from the indie-punk style that Humane The Moon is inspired by, there is a distinct level of imprecision and distortion in the production of the song. His perfect use of imperfection reinstates his ability to make music that gives you exactly what you want from this style, but in a totally nonchalant, casual way.

Today’s new track follows Humane The Moon’s most recent release ‘I Saw A Dog’, which was recently played on The Zane Lowe Show, where he was described as an ‘Absolute superstar’.

Alongside the release of the track. Humane The Moon is announcing some upcoming live shows, including a headline at The Hackney Social on November 16t. See all dates below.

26th Oct – Rossi Bar, Brighton

15th Nov – Supp The Murder Capital, Electric Ballroom, London

Nashville-based alternative pop/rock artist Kitty Coen shares raw track and lyric video “everything’s a mess” out everywhere now. The latest offering acts as a comforting companion as Coen allows herself to fall apart–plunging into heavier feelings and attempting to piece herself back together.

Kitty Coen, a rising star in the indie rock scene, has been hailed for her unique blend of alt rock, pop rock, and what has been intriguingly referred to as “witch rock.” Her music is a form of spell-casting, weaving a web of enchantment that draws listeners in and captivates them, with “everything’s a mess” following suit.

Out today, the haunting and mesmerizing “everything’s a mess” sees Coen embrace her own imperfections, and through a melancholic melody, sultry vocals and 90s-inspired guitar tones, bravely examine feelings of despair and confusion. Written in the midst of moving from Austin to Nashville, Coen found herself in a rough patch, clinging to the wrong people and getting hurt. It was this track that brought her back to herself–a healing reassurance. Coen recalls, “This song was my therapy, I sang it over and over again until I didn’t feel hurt anymore.”

The track offers refuge to others in the midst of hardship, to those that feel lost or overwhelmed–a gentle reminder that it’s OK to not have everything figured out. Coen adds, “It’s a song that encourages you to embrace the messiness of life, to find beauty in the chaos, and to keep going even when everything seems to be falling apart.” The track’s accompanying lyric video finds Coen in all the places she frequents to clear her head, mirroring the encouraging message of vulnerability and bringing listeners into Coen’s own processing in real time.

I’m happy to share my third full-length album with you, Goodbye Patterns. I produced the LP with Avery Kissick, and it was mixed by Jonathan Anderson and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova.

I wanted to step out of my usual mode of writing lyrics, which generally involves drawing from my own experiences, so I decided to write about supernatural and paranormal topics. As a result, the songs deal with werewolves, aliens, time loops, alternate dimensions, and spirits, among other things. Through using these as a jumping-off point, I found that I was able to explore topics like mortality, ego vs id, human agency (or the lack thereof), and the general disillusionment with day-to-day life.

The latest track, “Not Myself,” is loosely about turning into a werewolf at night. It’s not meant to be taken too seriously, inspired by a desire to escape the mundanity of day-to-day life and let the id take over. Along with Avery on drums and percussion, the song features Andrea Hedlund on vocals and violin. “Not Myself” is accompanied by a lyric video with makeup by Vanessa Fahlman that brings the imagery to life.

Brooklyn-based, Metro Detroit-raised alt-R&B wunderkind Charlie Burg makes his return with “Before We Step Inside,” out now via AWAL. Arriving just in time for his upcoming first tour of Southeast Asia, the single marks Burg’s first new release following his 2022 debut album Infinitely Tall. “Before We Step Inside” is a glimpse into where his sonic identity heads next as an artist – Stream

Playing out like an intimate conversation, propelled forward by guardedly optimistic guitar licks and a slow, shimmery groove, “Before We Step Inside” began its life as a forgotten voice memo that Charlie stumbled upon again in early summer days. Realizing the tune deserved some sunlight, he posted a snippet to TikTok, and it took off. Fans and other artist contemporaries flooded Charlie’s comments begging for the release of the song, even posting their own covers online from all around the globe. A rose-tinted view of the impending end of a relationship, the song makes the most of every moment before coming to a sudden, hollow end.

On today’s release, Charlie elaborates, “’Before We Step Inside’ details the story of two individuals grappling with existential dread right before entering a party and then promptly dancing away their misery. The song is intended to juxtapose crippling despair with the euphoria of celebration.”

Introspective and cinematic, Mereki today releases her official video for “End Of The World.” With the drama of a Bond theme song, fueled by swelling strings and loungey piano, the song’s video was co-directed by Mereki and her sister Joti-May Beach while on holiday together in Italy. Filmed on a handycam, the sisters reveled in youthlike wonder shooting in a poppy field and getting in trouble with the local farmer who owned the land. Another chapter of her debut solo album Death of a Cloud, “End Of The World” sees Mereki at her purest, quietly connecting with nature and looking to it for direction – Watch.

Mereki shares, “I co-wrote ‘End Of The World’ with a lovely Parisian composer I’d never met named Victor Le Masne. He sent me the most stunning piano arrangement and I ad-libbed the bulk of the melodies with some lyrics I found in my notebook. The music inspired me to write something timeless and hopeful and cinematic. The title ‘End Of The World’ is about the necessity of death for rebirth and the magic in all of it.”

“End Of The World” joins the visual universe Mereki has been painting with her recent videos for “Presence,” “Wake Up Dead,” “Purple Moons,” “The Garden,” “Twin Flame” and “Wasted Love.” All exhibiting the enchanting allure of both fairytales and reality, while tapping into the styles of an array of directors, the beauty within Mereki’s videos showcase her ability to take hold of every moment of life.

Back in March of this year, Mereki released her debut solo album Death of a Cloud via BMG and her own label BunBun Records. Created over seven years and three continents, in collaboration with a roster of the artists Mereki trusted most to bring this deeply personal and intuitively conceived material to life, the album is a look into the joy and difficulty of self-realization and finding the universe within, expressing this journey through music.

Death of a Cloud received praise from the likes of Billboard, FLOOD, Atwood Magazine and many others. In celebration of the body of work, Mereki hosted an album release party at Friar Park. At the release party, guests were welcomed with a Lily Vanilli tea party and a bed suspended in the clouds. Mereki’s guests were then invited to take a solo healing journey to self-realization through the magical garden walk, while listening to the record. The grounds were dotted with baby blue mushroom fairy circles and letting go rituals linked to each song on the record.

The fresh single delivers an alluring chorus painted by Kayla Brianna’s dazzling vocals over the sultry beat. “Down” marks the beginning of a new chapter for the multi-hyphenate star, as she ushers in her most daring and confident era yet.

Rich in cathartic songwriting and unmistakable vocal talent, ‘Miss You’ is a must listen for anyone navigating a break-up. Born from processing heartache, Oliver Keane’s new single is an impressive dose of relatable reflection. Sharing more he explained: At the time of writing the song, I’d been sitting in my flat with the blinds closed for two weeks with the same thoughts going round in my head. I decided to try and get those feelings out into a song which in time became “miss you”. It was months of going back to the song trying to get it perfect but eventually I came to terms with the fact that emotions aren’t perfect and there are flaws to the way we feel as humans, and that allowed me to finish the song and accept the imperfections in it.

Miss You is about trying to find hope during a breakup, and the pain and heartache that comes with it.

Miss You is produced, written and recorded by Oliver himself, shining a light on his talent for production. From a young-age he has been evolving his technical skills and has also been writing and producing for other artists including Nieve Ella and Abby Roberts

Derby-born Oliver Keane has been making a name for himself as an emerging singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer since he launched. In the run up to his debut EP ‘16mm Dream Sequence’, which dropped only last year, Oliver had already scooped much praise from the likes of Complex UK, Clash, Wonderland, Variance magazine and more.

Still just 20-years-old, Miss You marks the next chapter for this exciting artist on the rise. Oliver’s already formed a loyal fanbase across the globe with over 1.2M likes of Tiktok and 60K followers across his social media accounts.

Kandle can weave magic so powerful because she feels it too, she is out here in the darkness with us. A true music industry veteran, she has been a powerhouse in the scene with an impressive career spanning over a decade.

“Live A Lie” is the first single off her next album to be released spring 2024. Arguably her strongest and heaviest release yet, one that is completely vulnerable and unwaveringly honest; an ode to the darkness that surrounds us and the connections we find in it together.

Saskatoon based artist Daryl Uhrin launched their solo pop punk project, Everybody’s Side Project, which was born out of significant personal loss. The untimely passing of loved ones led him to channel his grief into his music, reigniting his deep-rooted passion for songwriting and performance.

Despite typically critical audiences, Everybody’s Side Project has received ample support, which has encouraged him to pursue this endeavor wholeheartedly.

Everybody’s Side Project is more than just a musical venture for them – it’s a testament to the transformative power of music, its ability to heal, and its exceptional capacity to turn adversity into opportunity.

“While ‘Stink Piss‘ narrates a story of betrayal, it’s also about strength and resilience. It’s about facing our demons, standing up to those who’ve wronged us, and finding our own path despite the challenges.” – Daryl Uhrin

Pop, alternative, and glam rock updated with a vibrant spirit of celebration: A salvo of hook heavy singles, stylized videos, and ambitious cross-country touring introduces The Dirty Shirts, an exuberant new band from Dallas, Texas.

Debuting in 2021 but born of the pandemic, The Dirty Shirts, fronted by lead singer and songwriter Nick Santa Maria, hit the ground running with shows as soon as vaccines would allow and released their debut album, In The Get Up From The Get Go, in 2022. National radio airplay for singles “Detonator” and “Please Me” (feat. Remy Reilly) served as an engaging introduction to an indelible musical signature as the band played for expanding audiences nationwide, including a national showcase at Cleveland’s Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, New York City’s storied Rockwood Music Hall, along with a relentless schedule of dates in their home state.

“Gin & Roses,” the new single and a ‘spiritual’ sequel, according to Santa Maria, to their incendiary 2020 release “Gin & Tonic,” showcases the breadth of the band’s range, with soaring vocals melodies and chiming synths set against an undeniably dancey alternative pop background. With timeless Bowie-and-Bolan 70s influences, recast in the present tense for fans of Gorillaz, Foals, and The Weeknd, The Dirty Shirts are a formidable, hard-hitting live experience that seamlessly translates their recorded work to an unforgettable show, with Nick joined by a cast of Dallas’ best musicians.

Respondent with black leather cool and sequined swagger, Santa Maria characterizes charisma and empathy behind dark glasses. The fashion-forward sensibility is a shimmering thread in The Dirty Shirts presentation, an update of glam-rock infused with a contemporary sonic sheen that mirrors the music, described by KXT Radio as “…sweaty hedonism in the smoky haze of last call.”

Combining hip-hop, pop, and Caribbean flavors, brothers Theron and Timothy have written hits for Akon, Usher, Sean Kingston, the Pussycat Dolls, Ashlee Simpson, and many others while using the name Rock City, eventually shortened to R. City. Born in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, the brothers decided after high school that they were going to try to make it in the music business. A move to America was necessary so they came to the States via Atlanta before settling in Miami. There, they began writing for Akon, who quickly signed the brothers to his Kon Live label. After their song “The Rain” landed on Akon’s hit album Konvicted, songwriting for others kept them away from their own music. It wasn’t until 2008 that Rock City released their infectious single “Losing It”, along with mixtape Put the F*cking Album Out. The album in question was Wake the Neighbors, which Kon Live promised for later that same year. The label never delivered, and eventually the album was shelved, while the duo continued releasing mixtapes (issuing no less than eight volumes of PtFAO).

Rock City finally left Kon Live in 2011 and started their own label, Rebelution Records, briefly changing their name to Planet VI for a few years before settling on R. City. Despite all the hassle releasing their own music, they had no trouble scoring hits for other artists, penning enormously successful singles for Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Miley Cyrus.  Additionally, R. City contributed to Grammy-nominated albums by Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, and Jennifer Hudson, among others. Dr. Luke signed R. City to his Kemosabe Records, and in 2015 the duo released #WhatDreamsAreMadeOf, an album about the struggles involved with their upbringing in the Virgin Islands. The album’s first single, “Locked Away,” featured Adam Levine and was a Billboard Hot 100-charting hit. With recent hit collaborations among the likes of Jung Kook, Latto, Ciara, Lil Durk, and J. Cole, there’s no telling what R. City will accomplish next.

Bassist Brian Cook, guitarist David Knudson, drummer Tim Latona, and vocalist Dave Verellen formed BOTCH in 1993, becoming one of the most ground-breaking and influential bands during a pivotal shift in heavy music. Their final show was June 15, 2002, the same day as the original release of An Anthology of Dead Ends. The members would go on to play in These Arms Are Snakes, Minus the Bear, and Russian Circles, among others, with acclaim for the band coming mostly post-breakup.

The band can also announce a re-mastered reissue of their final EP ‘An Anthology of Dead Ends’, out October 27th via Sargent House. Originally recorded in 2002, ‘An Anthology of Dead Ends’ serves as a swan song, sending off one of heavy music’s most inventive groups. Their monstrous concoction of metal, noise, indie rock guitar trickery, and depth is on full display. This is a last will and testament to the group’s drive and intent, cementing their legacy as one of the untouchable greats, already having influenced many a group and artist.

Moon Tooth released their first new music since their album Phototroph (13th May 2022 via Pure Noise Records) with the release of “Grimothy”. This is also the bands first new music since guitarist Nick Lee’s medically induced coma and being diagnosed with limbic encephalitic in 2022.

Striking a deft balance between raw expressionism and reflective introspection, “Weathering The Storm”, finds The Sleeping Souls grappling with the struggles of balancing personal adversities with the perpetual anxieties of the world imploding around us. As the band explain of the new track:

“”Weathering The Storm” is about being caught up in a situation that is completely out of your control. And trying to navigate your way through as best you can. It was written around the time Russia threatened to nuke Ireland and the UK. They had an animation that they showed on Russian TV of it being dropped off the coast of Donegal and obliterating everything — all of this just after I had moved there, of course! The stress of possible nuclear fallout coupled with some personal family struggles at the time helped me imagine an escape to a nearby island where I could survive the fallout.”

“Weathering The Storm” arrives as the fourth track to be taken from The Sleeping Souls’ forthcoming debut album ‘Just Before The World Starts Burning’. Recorded over the last 3 years between Frank Turner’s rehearsal space in Oxford and Badlands studios in Ireland, its 12 varied tracks take their cues from a wild array of influences, from the explorative post/rock sounds of Radiohead or Death Cab For Cutie, to the tempestuous punk thrashings of Plosivs and Hot Snakes, to the introspective alt/folk of the Elliot Smith and Ryan Adams canons. Speaking about making the album, Cahir adds:

“It’s been a very collaborative experience with everyone bringing ideas and throwing them into the mixing pot… Lyrically the album touches on a few different subjects – lost love, frustration, escapism and obsession – but at its core it’s about my relationship with my family. The process of writing and recording this album has been cathartic and helped me survive.”

With its tracklist including anthemic lead single “Liar/Lover”, the highly charged polito-punk follow-up “Caught Up In The Scrape” and explosively antagonistic “Rivals” as well as latest offering “Weathering The Storm”, The Sleeping Souls’ debut album ‘Just Before The World Starts Burning’ will be streaming everywhere on 24 November 2023 (via Xtra Mile Recordings).
