Arizona-based entertainment savant, Marquette King has been focusing on dialing in his new-age take on sound for the past several years. The All-Pro NFL Punter, Marquette has been officiating the marriages of different contemporary genres and mediums, making sure to not just engineer the music, but to make the audience experience the audible illumination coming through the speakers.

A different player in the entertainment game, Marquette’s long time spent on the football field introduced him to need of expression and release through songwriting, acting, and sound. Utilizing these passions specifically curating the relaxing and enchanting emotions with the mix of EDM, House, and Pop-Hop continue to push the boundaries of what new genre breaking music can be. In addition to his musical talents, King handmakes one-of-a-kind unisex jewelry which can be purchased on his website.

Currently residing in Phoenix, AZ, King most recently experienced a career highlight when his XFL team, the Arlington Renegades, won a 2023 Championship. He’s also currently dating pro female boxer, Mikaela Mayer – making them the ultimate sports power couple. In his off-time Marquette continues to stay fit with hobbies including lifting weights, playing basketball, running and Pilates. He also enjoys gaming and traveling, spending time with his pet Chihuahua Joker and dedicates his time in the charitable space to feeding the homeless.

Hi Marquette, welcome to OLC! You’ve had a remarkable career in both the NFL and XFL. How do you manage to excel in two different fields, sports and music, and what motivates you to pursue both passions simultaneously?

Honestly, I just want to be the best version of myself. I feel like a lot of people make the mistake of sticking to one thing and just doing it for the rest of their lives without really paying attention or understanding the fact that the world is so much bigger than a little world experience. There’s so many people in this world that you can make an impact on. You probably would have never known that you could have been successful without never giving it a chance because you’ve been so focused on one thing your whole life, so I don’t ever want to do that.

“Sweet Tea” is one of your latest music releases. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind this track and how did the idea for the music video come about?

It was during COVID my cousin came up with the chorus . It was funny and everything. I was going through these beats from my producer, and I felt like the chorus fit that beat. I decided I was gonna use that song, and I was going to write verses for it. The song has got a very country-pop vibe, so I thought we should record in the middle of nowhere. So we ended up going to Austin, Texas in this house to record it. My guy Nick did really good with coming up with ideas for a video, so that’s what we did.

You mentioned being inspired by Calvin Harris in the world of electronic dance music. How has your exposure to EDM influenced your own music style and production?

Well, this has taught me to be more diverse with what I create. I’ve always been diverse because I’m always listening to different styles of music minus EDM until I got older. I’ve always listened to pop and I actually really enjoy listening to different kinds of music. So that’s why I kind of bounced between pop, hip hop, EDM, and country music.

Your music has been described as a fusion of EDM, House, and Pop-Hop. Can you elaborate on how you curate these genres into your unique sound, and what message or emotions do you aim to convey through your music?

I just like making good music, something with substance that people can understand. If I’m telling a story or just how I feel, I keep it simple.

In addition to your music career, you handmake one-of-a-kind unisex jewelry. What sparked your interest in jewelry making, and how do you balance this creative outlet with your other endeavors?

I just felt, especially during COVID,  was when I really started tapping into that. I like this jewelry that I was making because it’s cool. I can choose my own colors, I can make them match whatever outfit I want to make them match. They just look really cool. I’ve always thought the properties are pretty cool too. I’m not somebody that’s super deep into the properties of the beads and stuff. I feel like us as individuals set our own tone and your mindset, your mentality. But it’s just cool to have, cool to wear, and people asked me to sell the stuff that I made. I just decided to go for it. Three words that I would describe it are:  creative, unique, and intimate.

Winning the 2023 XFL Championship with the Arlington Renegades must have been a significant achievement. Can you share some of the key moments and emotions you experienced during that championship run?

I was happy, I was happy that we won it. It always feels good to win. Emotion wise, I was just going with the flow. I wasn’t getting too excited. I wasn’t getting down. I was just kinda in the middle, just cruising through it. It was cool to hang around some of the good people on the team. I met some awesome people that were on the team, so it was definitely fun especially when you got a good group of people around you.

You’re known for your dedication to fitness and various hobbies. How do these activities contribute to your overall well-being and help you maintain a balance between your busy schedule and personal life?

You definitely got to work out. I feel like things usually happen more for me in workout more when I wake up in the morning. And I just work out as long as I can. Sometimes running in the mornings, lifting weights in the mornings, like it just gives you an extra burst of energy somewhere in the middle of the day when you normally get tired. It also just feels good because you’re just working on trying to be a better version of yourself, especially when you’re working out.

You’re also involved in charitable work, particularly in helping the homeless. Could you tell us more about your charitable efforts and what drives you to make a positive impact in your community?

I keep it real simple. There are some days, I decide to get meals for homeless people and bring food and water. I find a way to make their day a little bit better. It just feels good to help people. I like helping people see something a little bit different or put a smile on their face.
