INsiders Guide: Allegra Levy, CLAY, Danny Polo, Sleeping With Sirens, Kasbo…

“How deep is the ocean?” “What is this thing called love?” Jazz singer-songwriter Allegra Levymay not have all the answers, but she sure has plenty of questions. One thing about which there can be no question, though, is that her career is on the rise. Named one of the Top Ten Rising Stars among jazz vocalists in Downbeat’s 2021 Critics’ Poll, she has been dubbed a “double-barreled talent” by JazzTimes, and called everything from “sophisticated, worldly, and swinging” to “the new pin-up girl for cool.” Her latest album, to be released May 20, truly seals the deal. Out of the Question, Levy’s fifth release from SteepleChase Records, is composed entirely of songs in search of answers, from “Where Are You Going?” to Carole King’s “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” It features an all-star, all-women band, including Carmen Staaf on piano, Allison Miller on drums, and Mimi Jones on bass, with special guests Roxy Coss on sax, Aubrey Johnson on vocals, and Andrew Baird on guitar.

A Connecticut native now based in New York, Levy has appeared at most of the top jazz venues in NYC, including the Jazz Standard, the Blue Note, Birdland Theatre, Zinc Bar, and the Bitter End. “Fresh … exotic… and far beyond the ordinary,” declared The New York Times of her debut album, 2014’s Lonely City. Ever since, she has continued to pen a collection of harmonically adventurous-yet-familiar originals steeped in the Great American Songbook. Her third album, Looking at the Moon, was an Editor’s Pick in both DownBeat and JazzTimes. Her fourth, Lose My Number: Allegra Levy Sings John McNeil – featuring her own lyrics set to the tunes of renowned trumpeter John McNeil – was lauded in The New Yorker as “a showcase for Levy’s … agile vocalizing and her gift for sculpting words.”

Last spring, Levy ventured into jazz for the juvenile set with an internationally acclaimed children’s album, Songs for You and Me. Her new record, however, is strictly PG … or maybe even R, for rousing, riveting, and downright raunchy when it comes to her bluesy take on the ‘80s punk rock classic, “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” by The Clash.

This new project was the brainchild of Levy’s longtime collaborator, pianist Carmen Staaf, a winner of the Mary Lou Williams jazz piano competition, who currently serves as musical director for DeeDee Bridgewater. “She pointed out that some of the most beautiful songs are questions, not answers, and I became fascinated with the concept,” Levy says. “As I get older, I find that it really is more about the questions.”

CLAY’s multi-faceted forthcoming EP, Waiting for God in the Garden, is a purge of emotions that kick-starts an inevitable period of healing, reminding listeners that their reparative journey is non-linear. Instead, as we grow we experience life in a spiral, facing similar situations more than once but experiencing them from a different perspective.

The 6-track EP features the cathartic single “Fade Away” which sees CLAY bowing to the altar of mother nature, letting time erase the memories of a previous relationship, and alleviating the emotional stress that comes with the process. An ode to her former partner, “Think of You” reminds listeners that love shared between two people should not be deemed wasted just because the relationship has come to an end. Rather, as we begin the process of letting go, we should cherish the experiences shared with our loved ones. Its music video takes inspiration from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, uplifting the refreshing breakup anthem through the innocence of queer romance. On the EP’s introspective title trackCLAY comes to terms with the importance of looking inward and loving yourself fully while the vulnerable “How To Cry” speaks to accepting that you need to put the work into healing yourself, watering your own garden however you need.

Bringing the project to life visually, Waiting for God in the Garden’s cover art is an interpretation of Italian painter Botticelli’s Primavera and depicts the daughters of Zeus, otherwise known as The Three Graces. The trio’s symbolism of beauty, liberation, and solitude drives this next chapter of CLAY’s career through embracing the transformative power of self-love. To date, previous releases from the EP have garnered over 860K streams — adding to her more than 42 million global streams — and earned media support from the likes of Rolling StoneGLAADSpindle Magazine, and Glasse Factory, in addition to landing on Spotify’s New Music Friday, Chill PopFresh Finds R&B, and Lowkey playlists among others.

The Los-Angeles based artist makes music as a vessel for healing and connection. With a voice that resonates with raw emotion and lyrics that captivate like poetry, CLAY takes listeners on a journey through the depths of human experience. Hailing from the vibrant flower-child city of San Francisco, CLAY‘s passion for social justice and a commitment to uplift marginalized communities stems from upbringing. Proudly embracing her identity as a queer and neurodivergent artist, she uses her platform to create a safe space for all to express themselves freely. As an independent artist, she remains dedicated to preserving her creative integrity and autonomy, a stance that has earned her dedicated listeners and critical acclaim.

Raised in Nashville but now LA-based, Danny has roots in Dominican Republic as well as Colombia, where he recently traveled back and forth to further develop his sound, pushing his r&b to new territories. The result can be heard in the bilingual Gundam, a sultry track narrating the timeless tale of a distant rendezvous, where Polo embraces the allure of a passionate but fleeting connection. It comes alongside a music video directed by Zarza

multi-faceted Swedish artist Kasbo releases his newest single “Resenären.” The track is the latest from his forthcoming third album, The Learning of Urgency, a concept project that channels the art of slowing down in a society that glorifies the “rise and grind” mentality.

Rejecting the societal pressure to constantly achieve and do more, Kasbo shifts the perspective on work ethic and mental health. His new philosophy on slowing down is reflected in “Renesären,” an introspective sonic journey that evolves over the course of seven minutes, leading the listener to in turn slow down and be present in the moment. It’s both pensive and invigorating and a total departure from the vocal-led electronica that he’s known for.

The goal of this track was to take the listener on a journey and take time doing it. The name ”Resenären,” which means the traveler in Swedish, sort of speaks to that. With my album theme being centered around slowing down in an ever-accelerating world, I wanted to push that concept and take my time leading up to the final climax with this song. In 7 minutes, it’s the longest one I’ve ever made.”     — Kasbo

Big Feelings,” a new single from the Deluxe Edition of Jessie Baylin’s Strawberry Windis out today!

When Jessie Baylin paired up with GRAMMY winner Daniel Tashian (a frequent collaborator over the past 13 years) to write new music for the Deluxe Edition of Strawberry Wind, the first song that emerged was “Big Feelings.”

Baylin explains, “After an emotional summer with my youngest, ‘big feeling’ son, I felt compelled to dig into some of the conversations my husband and I were having with him.” She adds, “And after thinking about it, I realized we all – myself included – struggle with big feelings. The challenge is how to release them appropriately when they arise and feel so strong and heavy – the delicate balance of feeling them and not completely letting them take over your entire self.”

The Dangerous Summer have shared their newest single “What’s An Hour Really Worth” via Rude Records off of their upcoming album Gravity. Life is short and unpredictable, and “What’s An Hour Really Worth” serves as a reminder to listeners to live as ferociously as possible. The track urges them to explore, to fail, to get up and keep pushing regardless of what happens.

‘This song came somewhat earlier on in the writing process. That original riff really sent us into the chase of this song,” explains vocalist AJ Perdomo. “The way all of the instruments push and pull really reminds me of a futuristic Reach For The Sun track. I remember when we reached the bridge, we really tried to switch it up. We try to set limitations to reach new ground sometimes, and the limitation we set was – no cymbals. Christian [Zawacki] really dug in and drove us home on that one. Happy that it is finally out.

“What’s An Hour Really Worth” is available to stream now at https://music.ruderecords.com/whatsanhourreallyworth and with a new music video at https://youtu.be/VlvP7Hna1Qo?si=DPlFYmrAEWymwDtN

Spanish Love Songs fans are now able to stream an acoustic, reimagined version of “Haunted”, the band’s acclaimed first single from their epic album ‘No Joy’ out now.

Stream “Haunted” (Acoustic) Here

“Every time we decide to rework a song for an “acoustic” version, it inevitably starts with stripping everything back to how the song originally started,” explains vocalist and guitarist Dylan Slocum. “’Haunted’ was no different. This song started as an acoustic love letter while I was losing my mind in the living in the suburbs in the winter of 2021. The beginning and ending of this call back to that early desperate version.”

“Once we locked into that idea this time around, everything else fell into place — this is less an acoustic version of the song and more an alternate reality version of what could have happened if we obsessed over a 90s drum beat in the studio, or if we hadn’t come up with the song’s main synth riff as a placeholder that we fell in love with.”

The band is currently in the middle of a co-headline tour with Oso Oso featuring support from Worry Club and Sydney Sprague. Shows kicked off April 3 in Mesa, AZ and will continue until May 9 with its final night in Dallas, TX. They perform tonight at Fairmount Theater in Montreal, QC.

This summer Spanish Love Songs will support Gaslight Anthem across select cities in Europe, along with special commemorative SOLD OUT shows, performing their album ‘Brave Faces Everyone’ in its entirety taking place July 8 and 9 at Lafayette London.

First off, fragrance is super essential for making a great first impression. In just a few seconds, the right scent can catch someone’s attention, make them curious, and stick in their mind long after you’ve met. Whether it’s a flowery smell or spice, fragrance can draw people in and make them want to get to know you better.

Plus, scents have the unique power to bring up emotions and memories. Thanks to our brain’s memory and emotion center, they hit us right in the feels. A familiar smell can take us back in time, making us feel nostalgic, cozy, or excited. Using the right scent can help create a special connection with someone, making them feel closer to you.

And remember, the fragrance you choose says a lot about who you are. Just like picking out clothes, your scent can show off your personality and what you value. Whether you go for a bold, confident scent or something more subtle and classy, it tells people a ton about you and what you’re all about.

5 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR SELECTING APPEALING FRAGRANCES

  1. Choose Fresh Notes: Opt for fragrances with fresh or citrusy notes like lemon, lime, or bergamot, which can have a refreshing and uplifting effect. These scents are often perceived as energetic and optimistic, making them ideal for creating a positive impression on a date.
  2. Avoid Heavy, Overpowering Scents: Fragrances with heavy, overpowering notes, such as musk, patchouli, or vanilla, maybe a preference for some individuals, but they can also be overwhelming or even off-putting to others. Choosing light, elegant fragrances that gently unfold on the skin and leave a pleasant impression is best.
  3. Consider Personal Preferences: Every person has their own unique set of preferences regarding fragrances. Please talk with your partner about their favorite scents and try to understand what fragrances they enjoy. When selecting perfumes for dates, opt for scents that align with their preferences and personality.
  4. Limit the Number of Fragrances: Less is more when wearing perfumes on dates. Try not to overdo it with the amount of fragrance you apply to avoid it becoming overpowering or unpleasant. A light application of perfume on pulse points, such as the wrists, neck, or décolletage, will provide a pleasant scent that is noticeable but not overwhelming.
  5. Trust Your Instincts: Most importantly, trust your instincts and feel comfortable in your choice of fragrance. If you enjoy the scent and it reflects your personality, it’s likely to be attractive to others. Be bold and experiment with different fragrances once you find the one that makes you feel confident and alluring.

“Jamaica Time” is the second song off of Eddie’s debut EP “I Am What I am” set to release later this year. This pop and reggae ballad touches on him returning to Jamaica while trying to recover from an illness. Speaking on the track, Eddie said “the songwriting process commenced upon my return home following the challenging period of my Shingles attack. Collaborating closely with my wife, Michelle, herself a talented singer-songwriter from Australia, we began to channel our experiences and emotions into music. Additionally, I had the privilege of working with esteemed songwriting and producing partners such as Native Wayne Jobson and Brian Jobson, both multi-Grammy Award-winning talents, as well as Jeff Barry, a distinguished producer and songwriter inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame“.

Visionary NYC New Music pillar Metropolis Ensemble, Brooklyn’s Grammy-nominated Sandbox Percussion, and acclaimed Michigan musician/composer Erik Hall team up this summer to create a large-scale arrangement of Simeon ten Holt‘s landmark of Dutch minimalism Canto Ostinato on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

In early 2023, Erik Hall released an acclaimed interpretation of Canto Ostinato, the second album in a trilogy of reinterpretations that began in 2020 with the release of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. The Amours, a duo composed of sisters Jakiya and Shaina – share their debut EP CHANGES, executively produced by Camper, out now via November Yellow. Listen HERE. Watch the “Pick Me Up” ft. TA Thomas official video HERE.

The Amours in their own words:

“We’re beyond excited to share this body of work with the masses. The process of formulating this project has been one of the best experiences of our lives. We were able to really dig deep and showcase a level of vulnerability we have yet to reveal to our fans. In the midst of this process, we’ve gone through a whirlwind of Changes. From the EP title, to the shift in songs, scratching everything and starting over. We’ve embraced every single Change we’ve had to endure. Most recently, at the conclusion of this process we lost one of our biggest fans and a piece of our heart, our grandfather Lee S. Berry. We dedicate this project to him, our hero. As we continue on, and embrace one of the hardest Changes we’ve ever had to deal with we know that he is smiling down on us, rooting for us to keep going.”

Eugene, OR – Southtowne Lanes is thrilled to share “Find Your God”, the latest single from their forthcoming album Take Care. “Find Your God” is an blistering track that races through guttural screams only to find peace and acceptance in its final moments. Listen now here: https://push.fm/ps/rkgpaqyb.

Soaring up, I’m running with whatever change is occurring,” shares singer/guitarist Matt Kupka. If my father’s death was the light going out and escaping up to the skies, I am desperately racing against the speed of light to meet him before he departs this world. The song races up and up, and finally breaks through the clouds.

He continues: “At the end of the song, a moment of tranquility mirrors the calm before the oncoming storm, and the last voicemail my father left me are the first drops of ensuing rain.

Alt-pop artist CLAY (she/they) has released her new single and music video “Fade Away.” Written after a break-up, the restorative track speaks on trusting time to absorb the memories of a former lover, alleviating the emotional stress that comes with the process. Using nature as the antidote to her broken heart, the visual sees CLAY in a getaway car as she drives to the beach to release her emotions and commit to herself again.

On the release, CLAY shares, “Just like the accompanying video, this song is meant to be played full blast in the car on a sunny afternoon when you finally are ready to move on. It’s the moment you’re ready to fall in love with yourself again, ready to let that world-shattering, earth-shaking love go. In this song, I am letting love fade into the sky, into the ocean, into the elements of nature that I have always trusted wholeheartedly. Nature, the god I worship, whose feet I bow to. Releasing the love that was once all-consuming back to where it came from. Back into the power of the earth and her elements, her glory. Taking on that glory for myself. Taking my power back. Learning to love myself as fiercely as I once loved her. Playful, joyful, embodied.”

Alien Ant Farm have released their long awaited, highly anticipated new album ~mAntras~ out today through Megaforce Records. Fans can now stream it in full here: https://orcd.co/mantras and check out the new music video for “Storms Over” here: https://youtu.be/7Fg7HRnKInw?si=hALlzCvJ6y9il4Wr

The band previously released the single and music videos for “So Cold”, “Fade”, and “Last Dantz, which were wildly welcomed and acclaimed by fans old and new.

~mAntras~ is a record that will not only challenge your preconceptions of the band, but will also firmly reassert their place in the world. The band’s sixth full-length, it was shaped by personal change and growth, and it represents as close to a new beginning as a band first formed in 1996 can get. At the same time, it’s not a record that dismisses and disregards the past. Far from it. A record of deep contemplation, ~mAntras~ was born out of various trials and tribulations—its songs don’t just take the listener on a musical journey, but, as its title suggests, also on a personal and spiritual one.

Alien Ant Farm have encountered a lot of adversity since blowing up in 2001 with two iconic songs—first their own composition, “Movies”, and then their classic, generation-defining cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”—but none more so between the release of Always And Forever and this record. It’s no surprise, then, that a lot of it has been captured on the 11 tracks that make up ~mAntras~. As guitarist Terry Corso puts it: “Growing up, divorce, children, family, death, band break-ups, surgeries, illness, health—everything is in this record. It’s literally a product of all the fucking shit, good and bad, that we went through.”

Spangled have been reborn in the new year with a collection of songs that span funk, indie pop, rock and anthems in their journey to forge music that will stand the test of time continues. This new chapter is called ‘Always In Colour’, their second EP and most ambitious work to date.

‘Crank Up The Splendour’ boldly screams for euphoria in a world seemingly shrouded in darkness. It’s a song that lets you know, there’s still something special about life on this planet. So put you sunny’s on, and have a beer in the garden with your friends.Band quotes:

“Few times the earth doth collide happiness with coincidence, this was one of those days. The sun’s exodus was widely yearned after during the winter of 2021, but one magical morning roughly March ‘22 the world folded in on itself, the sky opened its heart and I was very much with it. Jamie moped round, and the escapades begun. Niall’s evening was decimated as he couldn’t come because he was working, also wasn’t invited. Crank up the splendour reveals a story of tragic glory, the universe beamed euphoria down upon us that day, we got twatted. Differently twatted. It was Mark Twain who said “the two most important days of your life, are the day you’re born, and the day you find out why” and that day we found out why. For that. For then. That moment, that day, that sense of everything will be alright. I could walk on the o-zone forever doused in sun-cream just to exist purely within that moment, it was sunny man, hella sunny. It’s a good song

Award winning songwriter Randie O’Neil’s storytelling comes from a sincere place, paired with her smooth and endearing sound, characterized by a dash of sass.
She skillfully weaves a tapestry of emotions, experiences, and thoughts through her music with such outstanding dexterity. Each track she creates carries her unique vocal flair and thematic essence, that resonates with listeners on various levels.
Her new single ‘Crash and Burn’ is no exception.
Randie said:Some relationships start out like a thrill, but they can soon become real dangerous. The lyrics in this song explore the thrill of the chase, the haunting uncertainty of who’s in control, and the urgent need to escape before disaster strikes. Crash and Burn captures the essence of love’s exhilarating, yet perilous journey”

Randie’s emotive vocals and evocative storytelling paint a vivid picture of the rush and the risk, urging listeners to heed the warning signs and make a move before it’s too late.Crash and Burn is a powerful anthem for anyone who’s ever felt trapped in a love that’s hurtling towards destruction, reminding us all to choose our paths wisely before we find ourselves careening out of control.

Rock band FELICITY is putting their infectious songwriting on full display with their new shimmering pop-rock anthem, “Lovesick Blues”. Drawing inspiration from popular songs spanning the decades, “Lovesick Blues” is a modern love song with a nostalgic twist, and a testament to the band’s signature style of blending tongue-in-cheek lyricism with a wide spectrum of sounds that’ll have you singing along in no time. The song is set to be released on May 14 via Zodhiac Records. Fans can pre-save it now, here: https://listentofelicity.com/lovesickblues.

“‘Lovesick Blues’ is one of our favorite songs we’ve written. We feel like it’s one of those timeless songs accessible to all generations,” the band shares. “Many of our songs are geared toward a specific demographic. Our heavier songs might be for metal heads or a pop-punk anthem for the warped tour purist, but with ‘Lovesick Blues’, we feel like it could be played on the radio, in a department store, or sung in the shower.

They continue: We’re so proud of it! We’ve never written a love song before, so this was entirely new. We have songs that are inspired by relationships, but if you want to be a real band, then you gotta have a classic love song, so we’re happy we hit this milestone!
