Alternative pop band Valley return with a brand new track, “When You Know Someone,” out today through Capitol Records/Universal Music Canada. Although the song was born out of the uncertainty in grief there’s a sense of familiarity as if Valley have returned to their roots. Karah’s harmonica blares with urgency over a loop Rob had worked on, inspired by Bruce Springsteen and The Killers, a bit of an arena-rock sound that seems like it should be soundtracking a pivotal scene in a cult classic — Stream.
“We wrote ‘When you Know Someone’ with Trent Dabbs (Kacey Musgraves, COIN, Ingrid Michaelson) who helped us channel the emptiness we were feeling,” Karah explains. “He sang the lyric ‘when you know someone, think you know someone’ and I remember all of us just feeling so exposed and so seen by him in that moment. It’s a beautiful feeling of safety when you can write a song with people that truly understand where you’re coming from, you can’t hide and that’s powerful.”

The video was filmed at RC Harris water treatment plant, Valley explains, “We were looking for a sense of brutalism mixed with beauty for this video and a lot of open space because the song feels very empty yet scenic.”
After a decade of making music together Valley are relearning to be a band together, entering a new chapter now as a trio. Rob Laska (lead vocalist), Alex Dimauro (bassist) and Karah James (drummer) were once rounded out by guitarist and lifelong friend Mickey Brandolino. In January, Mickey took his bandmates out and let them know that he would be leaving the band to focus on his dream of being a producer.

Southtowne Lanes has today released their highly anticipated new album Take Care, out now via Dog Knights Productions. The record – a deeply personal account of loss and grief – features recent singles “Find Your God”, “Witness”, and “Go Cold”, and marks the band’s first full-length since 2016.
“On the surface, this record was written largely in dedication to my father, whom passed away in a brutal and sudden manner in September of 2021,” shares lead singer/guitarist Matt Kupka. “The album, song by song, dissects the stages of grief: how they relate, how they changed me, how I dealt with them, and how they led me down to the depths of my own mortality, where it seemed there could be no light.”
He continues: “In the end, Take Care is about the shreds of hope that are found buried in the wreckage of loss and grief. It’s about peeling back the layers of hurt, and finding resilience in the human condition.”

“f 0 0 d” is an ode to the swirl of grief, hope and uncertainty in letting go of a codependent relationship; in this case, one with food. In total beccs fashion, the artist takes the stigmatized topic of disordered eating and addresses it under the guise of a cool, textural alternative pop track. Written at a later stage of her recovery when her eating disorder, while seemingly inactive, still fueled certain thoughts and desires, beccs strived to see the world without the veil of her eating disorder obscuring it.
The fluid track is like water, echoing trance-like sound baths sparking self actualization and healing. It flows with harmonic and rhythmic twists and turns, lush synths and sampled vocals, but remains intimate and organic, surprising and guiding listeners forward into a final body of water – a space to process. Inspired by notes of Okay Kaya, Portishead and Tirzah, the single distinguishes itself on stay moist as the one track the queer artist, known for her powerhouse vocals, produced herself.

Each song on this EP reflects and confronts difficult, shameful, even ugly parts of oneself. By allowing pain and trauma to move through like water instead of getting lodged inside, we can all ‘stay moist’ as a way to remain honest, authentic and glistening through our healing. Parallelle are two Amsterdam-based brothers from the south of France. Conceived in studios of Los Angeles and Paris, WILL LAUT is a duo led by Frankie Gothard, aka COH, known for his role in the computer avant-garde scene of the late 90s. The project draws on COH’s earlier collaborations with vocal performers like John Balance of Coil, Cosey Fanni Tutti of Throbbing Gristle, and fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester. The duo’s singer and frontman William Laut, once a Eurovision contender, has a diverse musical background, ranging from working with children’s choirs to composing rock anthems, and organizing Asian music showcase festivals. WILL LAUT‘s music is a blend of ambient pop, noir minimalism, and synthesizer tango, featuring atmospheric textures, minimalist rhythms, and haunting crooner-style lyrics.
Candy Apple was started in 2018 by a group of friends who were playing in other projects that wanted to attempt doing something different together, incorporating various influences from hardcore punk to noise rock and post-punk. The bands’ 2018 demo tape was followed up with the Joyride EP in 2019, and later in 2021 the debut LP from Convulse Records, Sweet Dreams of Violence. The band’s most recent EP, World For Sale, was released on Convulse Records and Smoking Room in 2022. acclaimed New York City-based electronic musician, producer and activist Moby celebrates the life of Benjamin Zephaniah with new track “where is your pride?,” out now taken from his 22nd studio album always centered at night, due out June 14th and available for pre-order now.
The propulsive, break-beat driven track is spoken word with a powerful message delivered in the late dub poet’s characteristically warm burr. “Where is your love? / Where is your faith? / Where is your hope? / Where is your place? / Where is your pride?” Moby is proud to share a track with the late Benjamin Zephaniah to continue to celebrate his life and notes their aligned ideals, “As a vegan activist, and as a wise and compassionate man, Benjamin inspired me for many years. Benjamin Zephaniah was a British writer, dub poet, actor, musician and professor of poetry and creative writing. He was included in The Times list of Britain’s top 50 post-war writers in 2008. He won the BBC Radio 4 Young Playwrights Festival Award in 1998 and was the recipient of at least sixteen honorary doctorates. Zephaniah was also a vegan and animal rights activist.
Even by Moby’s standards, always centered at night is special. The album features 13 collaborations in all, from names many might recognize to others many undoubtedly will come to recognize. The captivating voices on always centered at night include Sudanese, Netherlands-based chanteuse Gaidaa, London-based, Burundian royal refugee J.P. Bimeni, and Kingston-raised, London-based Aynzli Jones. These are often personal songs, and the personal is the political, as is the border-defying nature of the work. I’m calling it a T4T love tapestry and I really just want to capture trans love and trans friendship and trans joy in these images.”

Not only did he exceed my expectations, but anyone watching would’ve thought him to be seasoned at falling into a pool off of a ladder, which, believe me, is an incredibly awkward ask of somebody. The fact this low-budget project came out looking high-budget is a testament to what this team is able to pull off.”
Speaking around the record, Kasbo comments “‘I’m In Trouble’ is about communicating to a loved one that you might not be doing so good, but in that able to share the load and go through it together. Fending off negative thoughts isn’t as tough when you’re two.”

Naming the White Stripes, Gill Scott-Heron, Santana and Goat as their main inspirations, ‘Belly Of The Mountain’ sees the singer Dessy landing powerful vocals inspired by Bulgarian folk music, where she’s from, interweaved with edgy screaming guitars, acoustic tones and a heavy psychedelic groove leading towards a guitar solo sounding like a snake charmer’s and a warm & intoxicating chant melody on the outro.
The days surrounding the release of a debut album should be a celebratory time for an independent artist. For the Americana singer-songwriter Sarah King, it was a bittersweet moment. Her first LP, When It All Goes Down, was released on March 29, 2024, to praise from everyone from American Songwriter to Brooklyn Vegan, The Bluegrass Situation, Glide Magazine, and many more.
Just three days later, on April 1, 2024, King received a preliminary diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer. After several weeks of testing, that diagnosis has now been confirmed. After being told she’d need multiple surgeries beginning in July, she made the decision to schedule the first following the Grand Point North Festival, so she could give her fans a proper “temporary farewell,” with her only full band show of the year.
Before her hiatus from performing, King, who is based in Vermont, will appear at a handful of festivals, including the Wildflower Festival in Richardson, TX, on May 18 – 19. These will be her first performances since receiving the news.
“While I’m heartbroken not to have the year I’d hoped with this album, the songs will still be there for me when my voice and my body are healthy enough to take to the stage again,” says King, pointing out that while any cancer diagnosis is extremely frightening, having surgery so close to her vocal nerves causes additional anxiety for a singer. Fortunately, she has an excellent medical team and vocal coach ready to guide her through recovery and rehab, so she can return to live performance – the thing she loves most in the world – as soon as possible.

Continuing, “It’s also inspired very loosely by ‘Into The Spider-Verse.’ I took my own interpretation and inspiration from the film and created a character in my head that is so ridiculously cool that people just can’t understand the weight of them. I wrote them this song.”

Off the back of her critically acclaimed single ’Storm’ (originally produced by Papi Hey), that came out last September, Milyssa Rose went back to the drawing board with producer Chethan Music to create a newly refined take on the song, the ‘Reimagined’ version.
Also falling off the back of her studio album ‘The Collection’ which came out January this year, Milyssa felt it was the right moment and time to make her indomitable return in line with Mental Awareness Month, for the newly crafted “Storm Reimagined”.
Milyssa said:“Storm Reimagined came about when Chethan Music requested my vocals for the original song, Storm. He wanted to experiment with building diverse and fresh instrumentation around the vocals.The end result was incredible! It became a musical earworm for us both. Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the song projects this whole subject matter throughout, it was a no-brainer to release”.
Lyrically, Storm Reimagined is a song for anyone going through any type of hardship. Sometimes it can feel like you won’t make it, and that it’ll never end.
The effect on your mental health can be dangerous, but being able to talk to someone about those issues is such a necessary, massive step.

Arto Vaun is a songwriter/musician and poet from Boston, MA. With his first project, a duo called Mishima USA, he played shows with artists like Rufus Wainwright, Ben Kweller, Daniel Johnston, Wheat, Kimya Dawson, War on Drugs, Mark Eitzel, and Wheat. Then life took him overseas for over 12 years, where he wrote a book of poems, finished a PhD in Creative Writing, and was an English lit professor. But he was writing songs nonstop. In 2013, he released The Cynthia Sessions. Now he’s back with Stuck Inside a Map (out in June 2024).
