The Review: ‘Strange Darling’ Is A Psychosexual Thriller That Defies Expectations

Directed by J.T. Mollner

Strange Darling, the best-kept secret to emerge from Fantastic Fest 2023, is a blood-soaked Trojan horse that defies genre conventions. From its intentionally opaque title to its slick poster, this film is rarely what you’d expect. But don’t let its cleverness fool you; it’s more than just style. Here’s why Strange Darling deserves your attention;

With this movie it’s as if Mollner crossed paths with Quentin Tarantino and tried to make a “#MeToo movie,” but with a twist that leaves you questioning everything. The film’s revelations are genuinely surprising, and its subversions feel empowering, even if unwittingly so. Star Willa Fitzgerald delivers a stellar performance. Her unnamed character’s sudden mood shifts and enigmatic personality keep us riveted. Fitzgerald’s commitment elevates the material, making her more compelling than the script deserves.

Shot entirely on 35mm film, Strange Darling boasts gorgeous, vibrant visuals. Giovanni Ribisi’s impressive work as the film’s DP adds to its allure. The chase sequences and action scenes are thrilling, and the blood looks convincingly real. Mollner wears Tarantino’s influence proudly. From pithy dialogue to a non-chronological structure, the film pays homage to the master filmmaker.

The best way to experience this film is cold turkey, to make the most of this experience, avoid trailers and reviews. Let the roller coaster of surprises take you on an unexpected journey. Strange Darling is a stylish, flawed gem that challenges expectations. It’s a psychosexual thriller that invites viewers to sit back and enjoy the wild ride.
