The Review: Take A Spellbinding Journey Back to Oz In ‘Wicked’

Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, is a visually stunning vibrant adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. The film, starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, takes audiences on a magical journey through the Land of Oz, exploring themes of friendship, identity, and the nature of good and evil.

From the opening scene, where the citizens of Oz celebrate the death of the Wicked Witch, the film sets a tone of grandeur and spectacle. The vibrant colors and intricate set designs immediately draw viewers into this fantastical world. Chu’s direction ensures that every frame is filled with detail, making Oz feel both familiar and refreshingly new.

Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba is nothing short of extraordinary. Her powerful voice and refined performance bring depth to the character, capturing Elphaba’s journey from misunderstood outcast to powerful witch with grace and intensity, ensuring that audiences are fully invested in her story.

Ariana Grande, as Glinda, provides a perfect counterbalance to Erivo’s Elphaba. Grande’s performance is bubbly and charismatic, yet she also brings a surprising amount of emotional weight to the role. The supporting cast also delivers strong performances. Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard brings a playful yet menacing presence to the film, while Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible adds a layer of intrigue and complexity. Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero is charming and conflicted, providing a compelling love interest for both Elphaba and Glinda.

One of the film’s standout features is its musical numbers. The songs, composed by Stephen Schwartz, are brought to life with stunning choreography and vibrant visuals. “Defying Gravity,” in particular, is a showstopper, with Erivo’s soaring vocals and the breathtaking special effects creating a truly unforgettable moment.

Visually, Wicked is a feast for the eyes. The production design, costumes, and special effects are all top-notch, creating a world that is both fantastical and believable. The attention to detail is evident in every scene, from the bustling streets of the Emerald City to the eerie forests of Munchkinland. Chu’s direction ensures that the film’s visual splendor never overshadows its emotional core.

For fans of the Broadway show, Wicked offers a chance to see their favorite characters and songs brought to life on the big screen in spectacular fashion. For newcomers, it provides an accessible and engaging introduction to the world of Oz. Either way, it is a film that is sure to enchant and inspire audiences of all ages. Wicked is a magical journey that you won’t want to miss.
