The Review: ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Booms It’s Way Into Theatres

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races into theaters with the same energy and charm that made its predecessors a hit. Directed by Jeff Fowler, this third installment brings back our favorite blue speedster, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz), along with his trusty companions Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba). The film introduces a new enemy, Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves, adding a fresh dynamic to the series.

The movie picks up after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with Sonic enjoying a peaceful life with his human friends, Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). However, this tranquility is short-lived as Shadow arrives, bringing chaos and a mysterious past that ties him to Sonic. Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Shadow is a standout. His deep, brooding voice perfectly captures the character’s complexity, making Shadow both a formidable foe and a sympathetic figure. Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Robotnik, and his dual role as both Robotnik and a new, estranged relative provides plenty of comedic moments.

The animation in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is top-notch, with vibrant colors and fluid motion that bring the characters to life. The action sequences are thrilling, particularly the high-speed chases and battles between Sonic and Shadow. The film’s pacing keeps viewers engaged, balancing action with quieter, character-driven moments.

One of the film’s strengths is its ability to appeal to both longtime fans of the Sonic franchise and newcomers. The script, written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, includes plenty of nods to the video games while ensuring the story is accessible to those unfamiliar with Sonic’s world. The soundtrack, featuring a mix of original scores and popular tracks, complements the film’s energetic tone. The music enhances the emotional beats and action scenes, adding another layer of enjoyment. Fans of the series will appreciate the inclusion of iconic Sonic themes, reimagined for the big screen.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a delightful addition to the franchise. It combines humor, action, and heart in a way that will satisfy both fans and newcomers alike. This film is a must-see for anyone looking for a fun, family-friendly adventure.
