The Review: ‘Maria’ – A Tribute To An Opera Legend

Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie, is a biographical drama that delves into the final days of the legendary soprano Maria Callas. Set against the backdrop of 1970s Paris, Maria explores Callas’ internal battle as she grapples with the loss of her once-incomparable voice and the bittersweet memories of her past triumphs. Larraín’s direction is both compassionate and introspective, offering viewers a glimpse into the psyche of a woman who has lost what defined her.

Angelina Jolie delivers a performance that can only be described as career-defining. Her portrayal of Callas is both majestic and vulnerable, seamlessly blending Callas’ public persona with her private struggles. The supporting cast, including Kodi Smit-McPhee as Mandrax and Alba Rohrwacher as Bruna Lupoli, provides strong performances that complement Jolie’s central role.

The soundtrack, featuring Callas’ own recordings, is a fitting tribute to the diva. The inclusion of her iconic performances enhances the film’s emotional resonance and serves as a reminder of her immense talent.

Maria I don’t feel will be for everyone though. Some viewers I feel may find the film’s introspective nature and slow pacing challenging, but those who appreciate a deeply emotional and character-driven narrative will find it a profoundly moving experience.

Maria is a beautifully crafted film that pays homage to one of the greatest opera singers of all time. Angelina Jolie’s captivating performance, combined with Pablo Larraín’s sensitive direction, makes this film a must-watch for fans of biographical dramas and classical music alike.

Maria arrives at Luna Palace Cinemas January 30.
