Exclusive Interview with Pop/Soul R&B Singer, Model and Actress, Hunter Elizabeth

  • Email: neill@outloudculture.com

Born in a small town in Montana, Hunter began singing from the young age of 10. Growing up, she performed every chance she got between attending summer schools for vocal training and starring in high school and community theatre musicals playing “Annie” in “Annie Get Your Gun,” as “Liesl” in “Sound of Music,” and as “Maria” in a second production of “Sound of Music.” She was also the lead singer in her own band “All Purpose”, performed in more than 7 school choirs, and was a member of Helena’s Chamber Singers.

With her soulful, smooth and unique sound, Hunter’s vocal talent was recognized throughout high school at local, regional and state level music festivals. She won the local “Idol” talent contest and as a major feat went on to compete on “American Idol” in 2011 and “The Voice,” in 2013 having made it to Top 100 in American Idol and Top 60 on Season 4 of The Voice!

After High School, Hunter left her hometown at the age of 18 to further her education at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, graduating with a double major in Vocal Performance and Music Production. During this time, she landed her first TV role in the 2017 sitcom pilot titled Spare Me. After landing the role, writer David O. Whatley was so impressed with Hunter’s music and immediately changed her role to involve singing in every episode of the series. Hunter also co-wrote/recorded the show’s theme song with acclaimed Composer Robb Padgett and her friend Lukas Nelson. Soon after, she became a sought-after resident performer at popular LA club The Nice Guy, where she performed for A-listers including Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, David Fosters, The Kardashians, and more.

HUNTER currently resides in Los Angeles, where she writes and records songs for TV shows with her co-writer and former The Voice contestant, Jeff Lewis, with songs featured in The Bachelorette, Love Island, The Biggest Loser, Married at First Sight, and American Ninja Warrior.  Her original song “I Am”, co-written with Chris Alan Lee, was also featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Love in the City.

Sadly, she was recently affected by the Palisades Fire, watching her beloved neighborhood burn to the ground. This experience reshaped her and made her stronger as a person and artist – resilient in overcoming the dire challenges that she and so many of her peers endured. She rose from the ashes inspired to create fresh music and with a powerful, positive perspective for hope, love, healing and change. Outside of work, HUNTER enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing drums, shopping, long beach walks, swimming, Pilates, and works as a personal trainer at Rise Movement part time.

1. Hunter, welcome to OLC! So great to have you here. Your sound fuses soulful storytelling with retro vibes from the ‘60s and ‘70s—how do you balance vintage influences with creating something fresh and modern?

A: The pleasure is mine, thank you! I was brought up on that vintage music, but I love listening to the pop charts just the same. I wanted to fuse the two—like Amy Winehouse and Adele did. When I record, I always like to lay down live instrumentation first. Real humans making music gives that natural, human feel we all love from our favorite tracks. I also recorded this album on all vintage equipment. Then I hand the track off to my producer to layer in modern electronic/pop sounds like what we hear on the 2025 radio. Blending those elements with real instrumentation feels like the sweet spot for that vintage-pop balance.

2. Jennifer Lopez described your voice as “smooth like butter,” and Lukas Nelson called your soul your “superpower.” How do you channel that emotional depth into your vocal performance and songwriting?

A: When I sing and write, I really try to put myself into the lyrics—feel them, act them out, and connect with them emotionally. That way, when I perform, I can truly emote what the song is saying. I grew up singing and acting in musical theater, and I think that really helped shape how I connect to a performance.

3. Your upcoming EP includes collaborations with songwriting heavyweights like Jamie Hartman and David Ryan Harris. What was it like creating with them and how did those sessions shape the project’s sound?

A: I’m so grateful for David. He’s become a dear friend—basically family at this point. He produced the EP, co-wrote most of the songs, and went above and beyond my expectations. His musical instinct is incredible, and he has such a kind, generous soul.

Jamie and I actually started “All In” years ago in a session with my former producer, John Alagia. We scrapped it at the time—it didn’t make my first EP. But when I started putting songs together for this project, I remembered it and brought it to David. We had a feeling we could finish it and turn it into something special—and we did. Jamie is such an amazing songwriter. Watching him and John come up with those wild chord progressions and soaring hooks was unforgettable. They gave David and me a beautiful foundation to finish building on.

4. Your new single “GOOD GIRL” drops August 1, followed by your sophomore EP in August and “Me and My Mustang” in September. Which track on this project feels the most personal to you, and why?

A: I’d have to say “All In.” When I originally wrote it, it was about falling in love. But in January, I lost my house in the Palisades fires. Life got really rough after that—financially and emotionally. I remember throwing my hands up one day and yelling, “I don’t care what the circumstances are—I’m going to give it everything I’ve got and get out of this.” That was my “all in” moment. Suddenly the chorus meant something completely different. Now it feels like an anthem for resilience—for giving life everything you’ve got, no matter what.

5. You’re joining Casey Abrams and Dylan Chambers on the ‘Casey and Friends Tour’ this fall. What are you most looking forward to about being on the road with these two artists?

A: Honestly, the games we play backstage or while waiting around at the airport! Casey and Dylan are hilarious—we have so much fun just goofing off and laughing together.

6. “Disco Ball” radiates empowerment and joy—what was the inspiration behind that track, and how does it reflect where you are in your life right now?

A: The inspiration was literally a disco ball! We wanted to write a song about how our imperfections are actually what make us beautiful. I think it was David who came up with the disco ball metaphor, and we just ran with it. It’s a reminder that flaws can shine.

7. You’ve had success across music, acting, and modeling—from Skechers Super Bowl ads to roles on The Morning Show and The Bold and the Beautiful. How do you navigate these creative lanes and keep them in harmony?

A: It definitely keeps me on my toes! In today’s entertainment industry, you almost have to run in multiple lanes to keep the lights on. I’m lucky to have an amazing team of agents who help keep my schedule manageable so I can make time for it all. I’m super grateful for their support.

8. You’ve been the face of Neutrogena and now Sephora. What’s one beauty or wellness ritual that keeps you grounded while juggling so many projects?

A: I love carving out time for self-care—morning and night. That might look like lighting a candle, taking a nice shower, doing my skincare, brushing my hair and teeth, and playing chill music that makes me feel good. Just creating a calming routine helps me feel grounded, no matter where I am—on the road, backstage, or in a hotel room.

9. You were raised in Montana, competed on American Idol and The Voice, and later studied in Hollywood. Was this always your childhood dream?

A: It really was. If little grade-school Hunter could see me now, I think she’d be thrilled. I’ve already exceeded her expectations.

10. After surviving the Palisades Fire, you’ve spoken about finding strength through that devastation. How has that experience influenced your music and personal mission?

A: The experience somehow… took the pressure off. It reminded me that things are just things. Life is unpredictable—you can lose everything in an instant. That shook me in the best way. I stopped striving so hard for money, perfection, and success, and started focusing on joy and being present. Now when I sing, I’m not chasing perfection—I’m singing for joy.

11. You’ve performed with legends like Willie Nelson and Lukas Nelson at Austin City Limits and The Hollywood Bowl. What’s been your most surreal moment onstage so far?

A: Definitely that Hollywood Bowl show. My mom is a huge Willie Nelson fan, both my parents were in the audience that night. At the end of the show, Willie gave me a hug on stage and I said thank you for having me. That memory—being on stage with him and my friends and my parents watching—is a keeper.

12. With over 1.2 million Spotify streams on your debut EP and growing momentum around your new music, what do you hope listeners feel or take away from this next chapter of your artistry?

A: My goal has always been to make music that connects. That was true for my first EP, and it’s still true now. With David producing this time around, I really leaned into that vintage soul sound even more. I hope listeners hear the growth, feel the emotion. I just want them to listen and feel like I get them. And I want them to dance. 🪩🕺
