A biopic about Sinéad O’Connor is currently in development.

According to Variety, the film will chronicle the life and career of the legendary Irish musician who tragically passed away in 2023 at age 56.

The project is being produced by Irish company ie: entertainment, which previously served as executive producer for the acclaimed documentary “Nothing Compares”—a film that also involved collaboration with O’Connor herself. Joining them are Irish production company Nine Daughters (“God’s Creatures,” “Lady Macbeth”) and See-Saw Films (“Slow Horses,” “The Power of the Dog”). Notably, Nine Daughters and See-Saw previously worked together on the film “Ammonite.” Variety has contacted See-Saw Films for confirmation but has not yet received a response.

The biopic has been in development since 2022, following the release of the “Nothing Compares” documentary. It will be directed by Josephine Decker (“Shirley”), with a screenplay by Irish writer Stacey Gregg. Production will be led by Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly of Nine Daughters, alongside Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films—Oscar winners known for “The King’s Speech” and “Lion”—as well as Neil Chordia (“Urban Hymn”). Music industry veteran Tim Clark will serve as executive producer on behalf of ie: entertainment. BBC Film is providing funding for the development of the project.

The upcoming biopic is expected to focus on O’Connor’s early life and her rise in the music scene. It aims to portray how a young woman from Dublin rose to international fame, highlighting how her talent and activism—particularly her efforts to expose abuses within the Catholic Church and Irish institutions—shaped her legacy.

The film’s key credits include Josephine Decker as director, Stacey Gregg as screenwriter, and producers Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly, Neil Chordia, Iain Canning, and Emile Sherman. The project is a collaboration between See-Saw Films, Nine Daughters, and ie: entertainment. Executive producers include Clark from ie: entertainment, Simon Gillis from See-Saw Films, and Kristin Irving from BBC Film.
