Universal Pictures Is Developing a ‘Knight Rider’ Movie

Universal Pictures is in the early stages of developing a new Knight Rider film, inspired by the iconic 1980s action TV series featuring David Hasselhoff. To spearhead the project, the studio has brought on the creators of Cobra Kai—Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald—to lead the creative team.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald are currently negotiating to write the screenplay for the remake. Additionally, Hurwitz and Schlossberg may take on directing duties, building on their previous collaborations on the Harold & Kumar films and American Reunion. If their deals are finalized, the trio is also expected to serve as producers under their production banner, Counterbalance.

The film will also be produced by Kelly McCormick and David Leitch for 87North, along with Gary Barber and Chris Stone from Spyglass. This marks the second project that Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald are developing together, following their 2021 production of the movie Plan B. Prior to the Cobra Kai team’s involvement, reports in 2020 indicated that Spyglass had partnered with James Wan to produce a Knight Rider remake. However, it remains unclear why Wan’s version did not move forward.

The original Knight Rider series was created by Glenn A. Larson and aired for four seasons from 1982 to 1986 on NBC. The show starred a 30-year-old David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a crime-fighter who partners with KITT, a highly advanced, AI-powered car voiced by Emmy-winning actor William Daniels. The series became a multimedia franchise, spawning three short-lived spin-off series, merchandise, and several video games.
