The live-action “Tomb Raider” series at Amazon Prime Video is gearing up for production.
The adaptation of the iconic video game franchise is scheduled to begin filming on January 19, 2026. Amazon MGM Studios has also confirmed for the first time that Sophie Turner will star as Lara Croft. The series was officially greenlit by Prime Video in May 2024, with reports of Turner’s involvement emerging in November of that year. Development details first surfaced in January 2023.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer. Joining her, Chad Hodge has signed on as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge. Jonathan van Tulleken will direct and also serve as an executive producer.
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said. “It’s rare to get to make a show of this scope with a character I grew up loving. Everyone involved is passionate about Lara and shares her bold, adventurous spirit. Get your artifacts ready… Croft is coming.”
Turner is the latest high-profile actress to take on the role of Lara Croft, following Angelina Jolie in two films and Alicia Vikander in another.
“I’m beyond thrilled to play Lara Croft,” Turner expressed. “She’s such an iconic character who means a lot to many people—and I’m giving it my all. Following in Angelina and Alicia’s footsteps is a big challenge, but with Phoebe at the helm, I know we’re in excellent hands. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’re creating.”
The series is executive produced by Crystal Dynamics; Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins via Wells Street Productions; Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen; Michael Scheel; Chad Hodge; Jonathan van Tulleken; and Legendary Television. Production is handled by Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM Studios. Waller-Bridge’s overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios further supports the project. The “Tomb Raider” series stems from a partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, facilitated through Story Kitchen’s first-look deal to develop additional stories for TV and film.
“Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios. “We’re excited to have Sophie Turner bring this character to life, embodying her courage, strength, and resilience. Led by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series aims to honor the beloved ‘Tomb Raider’ legacy while introducing new adventures for fans worldwide.”
Hodge’s recent credits include the films “Single All the Way” and “The Darkest Minds,” as well as the TV series “Good Behavior.” He has also created shows such as “Wayward Pines,” “The Playboy Club,” and “Runaway.” Van Tulleken has directed episodes of “Shogun,” “Dope Thief,” “Upload,” and “Top Boy.”
Waller-Bridge is represented by UTA, Independent Talent, McEwan & Penford, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Turner’s representatives include CAA, Independent Talent Group, and Public Eye Communications. Hodge is repped by WME, Anonymous Content, and Ziffren Brittenham. Van Tulleken is represented by WME, Untitled, and Independent Talent. Story Kitchen is repped by WME and Pryor Cashman.
