INsider’s Guide: Promiseland, Double Tiger, CHROMA, ONE HUNDRED MOONS, Q052…

Multidisciplinary artist Promiseland (aka Johann Rashid) returns with “The Girl Who Faded Away,” a new single featuring Emma Acs via House of Feelings Records. Dreamy yet eerie, the track swells with hushed vocals and a storm-like intensity — slowly gathering before crashing all at once.

“As summer ends, a certain emptiness sets in,” Rashid said. “The world feels heavy, a collective comedown. ‘The Girl Who Faded Away’ is a song for that feeling.”

The single follows “Only Broken,” mixed and mastered by Dave Harrington of DARKSIDE. Across his catalog, Promiseland crafts a fiery collision of punk vocals, pounding beats, ritualistic chants, and lyrics that feel both urgent and poetic.

His 2023 debut album “Sad but Happy” arrived via Cult Records (helmed by Julian Casablancas), and included “Take Down the House” — a menacing highlight featured on Casablancas’ Grand Theft Auto V radio station, Kult 99.1 FM.

This year’s singles showcase Promiseland’s knack for cinematic videos and lyrics that capture the desperation and frenzy of modern life. With a fast-growing global fanbase — particularly in Mexico — Rashid continues building an ever-expanding universe where each release stands as its own distinct world.

Easy Star Records artist and producer Double Tiger (aka Jay Spaker) returns with his first new music since 2020’s “The Journey.” His latest single, “Yearning,” is built on unreleased riddims from reggae icons Sly & Robbie, recorded in Kingston, JA and mixed in Boston, MA. With horn arrangements by Lee Hamilton (John Brown’s Body, Double Tiger) and a heavy dub version from Craig Welsch aka Dub Fader (10 Ft. Ganja Plant), the track bridges roots tradition with contemporary fire.

For Spaker, the opportunity carried deep weight.

“Being that it is such an honor to sing on Sly & Robbie riddims, I was initially a bit intimidated, honestly,” Spaker said. “But as I stepped into the booth that first night, a feeling came through that was effortless and full of vibes. When I felt the energy coming from Sly & Robbie’s playing, I just composed the lyrics and melody in one rough take. What an honor to be able to create alongside my musical heroes. Rest in Power to the mighty Robbie Shakespeare.”

Best known for his decade-long tenure with progressive reggae powerhouse John Brown’s Body, Double Tiger has toured internationally with Rebelution, Chronixx, Slightly Stoopid, Stick Figure, Morgan Heritage, Dirty Heads, Thievery Corporation, and many others. He also co-founded Dub-Stuy Records and has collaborated with reggae greats including Luciano, Johnny Osbourne, Lutan Fyah, Omar Perry, Eek-A-Mouse, Scientist, Rankin Joe, Brother Culture, and of course, Sly & Robbie.

His solo career has already made waves: debut album “Sharp & Ready” landed at #3 on the iTunes Reggae Chart and #5 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums Chart, and “The Journey” climbed even higher (#2 iTunes, #4 Billboard), earning Grammy consideration and placement on Hulu’s High Fidelity soundtrack.

On stage, Double Tiger balances modern soul-roots reggae, early dancehall, and UK-style dub — sliding seamlessly between singjay fire and soulful melodies. Whether fronting a full band or going solo, his performances pulse with love songs, anthems, and sharp social commentary, always driven by rhythm, horns, and community energy.

Pontypridd alt-rock trio CHROMA return with their new single “Riverhouse,” via Alcopop! Records. Two years on from their Welsh Music Prize-nominated debut “Ask For Angela,” the bilingual band step forward with a sharper, more personal take on their fuzzed-out melancholic rock.

“It’s been a whirlwind few years since we released our long awaited debut album and the response was far more than we could have ever imagined,” drummer Zac Mather said. “We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been able to take those songs to stages all over the world and get the chance to get back into the studio and record what we believe is the best possible follow up.”

For vocalist KT Hall, the new track carries especially deep meaning.

“It’s about grieving the loss of my close friend Sara,” Hall said. “I remember at the time it happened, a friend introduced me to the 5/7 stages of grief. […] Riverhouse explores the anger stage, the stage accepting the information that your loved one has gone. I was truly raging at the world at the time. The song is also about how much I love my close group of friends. It’s about reaching out for help when you’re struggling with the tough stuff life throws at you. Making these songs has been a wonderful experience and we’re so excited to share them with the world.”

The song marks CHROMA’s first new material since “Ask For Angela,” and arrives on the heels of its early appearance on 116: Ten Years Later, a massive 76-track charity compilation raising funds for Anthony Nolan.

With its balance of anger and tenderness, “Riverhouse” signals the beginning of a new chapter for CHROMA. The band will support PINS this September and bilk. on grassroots venue tour dates in October. Tickets are on sale now.

Toronto shoegaze outfit One Hundred Moons have shared “Ear to Ear,” the latest single from their forthcoming album “Black Avalanche.” The track drifts like a whisper down a dim corridor — vocals threading through murky guitars as minor chords twist into something both unsettling and alluring. By its close, the song leaves a spectral resonance behind, the kind that demands another listen.

The five-piece — Collin Young, Jen Vella, Justin Hunt, Matt Laplante, and NJ Borreta — have a distinctive sound, weaving cascading guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and ethereal vocals into immersive songs. Drawing from My Bloody Valentine, Radiohead, and the grit of ’90s alt-rock, they carve out a sound that is nostalgic yet strikingly modern, exploring themes of longing, transformation, and inner reflection.

“Ear to Ear” arrives mid-tour, with the band currently winding through Ontario after kicking things off September 19 in Waterloo. Renowned for their live shows, One Hundred Moons stretch their layered studio textures into sprawling, hypnotic journeys on stage — transforming haze into something tactile and immediate.

With “Black Avalanche,” the group promises to push those atmospheres further still, channeling their spectral edge into something both expansive and unforgettable.

Award-winning Mi’gmaq rapper and activist Q052 (Quentin Condo) returned today with “Loud Sunday,” the third single from his forthcoming album “Thunder Child” (out October 10 via Musique Nomade). Premiered on Spill Magazine, the track follows “Space Invaders, which earned praise from CLASH Magazine.

Built on boom bap foundations with sub-heavy bass and brooding synths, “Loud Sunday” is both a call-to-action and a confrontation. Interspersed with piercing air horns that double as rallying cries, the song channels Q052’s revolutionary spirit as he takes aim at the futility of war and the complacency of societies that tolerate tyranny.

“This song is about the senseless wars that are going on in the world and how society has become so tolerant of the tyrants destroying humanity,” he said.

Known for fusing hip-hop, grunge, alt-rock, and spoken word, Q052 draws from influences as wide-ranging as Immortal Technique, Rage Against the Machine, Ty Segall, and Cypress Hill. His sharp, uncompromising lyricism has already earned him Best Male Hip-Hop Artist at the 2023 International Indigenous Hip-Hop Awards and nominations at ADISQ, Teweikan, and GAMIQ.

Raised in Gesgapegiag, Gaspésie and now based in Sherbrooke, Q052 is as much an advocate as he is an artist, speaking out for Indigenous youth and the protection of Indigenous women and girls. His fiery performances have taken him to stages with Cypress Hill and festivals like FEQ, FME, La Noce, Innu Nikamu, and Festival Kwe!

German punk rock powerhouse MELONBALL return with “129,” their blistering new single out via Thousand Islands Records (CAN) and Rookie Records (GER). It’s the second preview of their anticipated sophomore album, due in early 2026.

As political as it is punchy, the track takes direct aim at §129 of the German Criminal Code — a law often criticized for being weaponized against antifascist groups and grassroots resistance. With rapid-fire rhythms, razor-edged guitars, and soaring melodic urgency, MELONBALL delivers both a rallying cry and a fierce critique of state power.

“With ‘129’ we wanted to call out the way this law has been used to intimidate and dismantle antifascist movements,” the band explained. “It’s more important than ever to stand in solidarity. Antifa unite!”

Musically, “129” finds MELONBALL at their sharpest: fast, technical, and relentless. The single embodies the band’s signature mix of high-octane hooks and uncompromising political firepower, carrying the torch of a tradition where punk is inseparable from resistance.

Since their debut, MELONBALL have hit stages across Europe and beyond, from Ruhrpott Rodeo and Manchester Punk Festival to Punk Rock Holiday and Music 4 Cancer, sharing lineups with A Wilhelm Scream, Lagwagon, Belvedere, Authority Zero, ZSK, Punk Rock Factory, and The Iron Roses. Their acclaimed debut “BREATHE” (2023) and follow-up acoustic EP “eup•nea” (2024) set the stage for what’s next: a second full-length that promises to be their most powerful statement yet.

Electronic producer sean + ur not (Sean and you’re not) confronts the weight of climate anxiety on his new single “Dusty dolphin.” Pairing tongue-in-cheek lyricism with glittering synthpop and drum & bass rhythms, the track uses Charlie Brown’s melancholy as a lens for modern malaise — asking how anyone can pull themselves out of a downward spiral when even basic needs go unmet, let alone systemic action on the climate crisis.

Mastered by Nik Kozub (CFCF, Teen Daze, Khotin), “Dusty dolphin” follows solarpunk-inspired singles “350 beats per million” and “Usufruct,” and offers another glimpse of his forthcoming debut album “ECOLOGY 2090” — a 9-track exploration of climate change, community, and anxieties about both the present and the future.

Now based in Nelson, BC, sean + ur not emerged from a hiatus sparked by climate anxiety and depression to craft his most pop-forward material yet. His earlier releases — synthwave EPs “Walkabout” (2018) and “crumbs in motion” (2017) — earned him performances in Toronto alongside Mr. Mitch and members of the Bedroomer Collective. With “ECOLOGY 2090,” he shifts toward vocal-driven electronica influenced by Porter Robinson and PC Music, layering soaring hooks over dancefloor-ready production without abandoning the reflective nature at the heart of his work.

At once playful and devastating, “Dusty dolphin” is sean + ur not’s clearest statement yet: a shimmering pop track that refuses to look away from the unraveling world around us.
