Netflix has officially ordered a new TV series based on the classic 1985 mystery comedy film Clue, which itself was inspired by the popular Hasbro board game of the same name. This upcoming series will be a reality competition show, featuring contestants competing in various challenges to outsmart each other.
“Like countless families and friends over the years, we’ve all gathered around the table trying to crack the case — making Clue a shared source of nostalgia,” said Netflix executive Jeff Gaspin in a statement. “Thanks to the creative vision of our partners at Hasbro, IPC, and B17, we’re bringing a fresh, inventive whodunit competition that will draw today’s audiences into that iconic universe.” The show will also include appearances from familiar characters from the original game, such as Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, and Professor Plum. However, further details about the creative team, cast, and premiere date haven’t been announced yet.
According to the official description, “In the show, players will enter a real-life game of deduction and deception, tackling both physical and mental challenges. To win, they’ll need to outwit opponents and solve three key questions: who did it, where, and with what weapon.” Correct guesses will add money to the prize pool, while incorrect ones could result in elimination. Viewers can expect plenty of suspense, surprises, and red herrings, with appearances from familiar suspects from the original board game.
Previously, actor Ryan Reynolds was linked to a 2022 remake of Clue, but that project appears to have fallen through. In April 2024, Sony Pictures acquired the rights to produce both a Clue movie and a TV series from Hasbro Entertainment.
The original 1985 film revolved around guests at a mansion trying to determine who committed a murder, with what weapon, and in which room. Directed by Jonathan Lynn, who also co-wrote the screenplay with John Landis, the film starred Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren. Despite its initial lackluster box office performance, the movie developed a dedicated cult following over the years.
