Feature Film Of ‘Sleeping Dogs’ Based On Video Game, Gets Update From Simu Liu

Simu Liu shared an exciting update about the Sleeping Dogs video game movie on social media over the weekend. On X (formerly Twitter), Liu posted a photo of himself relaxing on the couch with his dog, alongside a screenshot of the Sleeping Dogs screenplay. He revealed that the reason for the post was to celebrate the completion of the film’s script.

In a follow-up reply to insider My Time to Shine, Liu expressed optimism about the project moving forward. When asked about his experience working with Square Enix, the publisher of Sleeping Dogs in 2012, Liu responded that they’ve been “great,” though he mentioned that some studios have been more challenging to work with.

“They’re absolutely great; it’s the studios that don’t seem to understand how important this IP is, but we will get them there,” he said.

Originally released in 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Sleeping Dogs was developed by United Front Games. The game follows Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-American police officer and martial artist who goes undercover to infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad organization. While often compared to open-world titles like Grand Theft Auto and Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs was praised for its engaging combat system, voice acting, and authentic depiction of Hong Kong.

A film adaptation was first announced in 2017, with Donnie Yen attached to star. However, the project eventually fell through. Yen mentioned earlier this year that the film was no longer in production, saying, “I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights… I waited for years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing. Well, onto better things.”
