Netflix has officially ordered a straight-to-series adaptation of the graphic novels “Black Hole” by Charles Burns, Variety has learned.

The project is a collaboration between New Regency and Netflix, with New Regency co-producing the series. Jane Schoenbrun is attached to develop the adaptation for television and will also direct. Plan B is set to serve as an executive producer, alongside Burns, Erin Levy, Yariv Milchan, Arnon Milchan, Natalie Lehmann, and Laura Delahaye for New Regency.

According to the official logline:
“There’s an old myth that haunts the seemingly perfect small town of Roosevelt: if you have sex too young, you’ll contract the ‘bug,’ a virus that transforms you into a ‘monster’ from your worst nightmares. That’s what Chris believed—until, after a reckless night at the start of senior year, she becomes infected. Now, she’s cast out into the woods to live with others who are infected, where a new, terrifying threat emerges: a serial killer targeting them one by one.”

This marks the first television adaptation of “Black Hole,” although multiple studios and creative teams previously attempted to develop a film version, none of which came to fruition. The most recent effort was in 2018, when director Rick Famuyiwa, known for “Dope,” was set to write and direct a film produced by New Regency and Plan B. The graphic novels, originally published between 1995 and 2005, were collected in a single edition in 2005.

Jane Schoenbrun recently wrote and directed the A24 film “I Saw the TV Glow,” which premiered at Sundance in 2024. They are also known for “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” and the upcoming “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” another Plan B project. Schoenbrun is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
