Miramax is bringing a beloved Halloween classic back to life with a new animated film inspired by the timeless hit “Monster Mash.” The studio is working to reimagine this spooky favorite for modern audiences. According to Deadline, Miramax has acquired the rights to adapt the 1962 Halloween song into an animated feature film.
CEO Jonathan Glickman secured the rights from Reservoir and Capizzi Music Co., adding this project to Miramax’s growing lineup of family-friendly content. The song was originally performed and co-written by Bobby “Boris” Pickett alongside Lenny Capizzi. Over the years, “Monster Mash” has amassed more than 500 million streams worldwide and generates approximately $1 million in annual royalties.
Billboard has ranked “Monster Mash” as the “Biggest Halloween Song of All Time.” Pickett famously said he wrote the song with Capizzi in under two hours and recorded it in a single take, with production by Gary S. Paxton. The lyrics tell the story of a mad scientist whose monster sparks a dance craze, attracting Dracula and Wolfman to join the fun. Glickman, known for his work on Netflix’s Wednesday and MGM’s The Addams Family films, expressed excitement about the project, stating, “For more than 60 years, nothing has captured Halloween quite like the ‘Monster Mash.’ We’re honored to be entrusted by the Pickett and Capizzi families and to partner with Reservoir Media to bring this iconic song to life as an animated musical for audiences of all ages.”
Reservoir, which represents legendary artists like Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, and Hans Zimmer, licensed the song for the upcoming film. Miramax’s current projects include The Beekeeper 2 starring Jason Statham and the upcoming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. The studio also plans to reboot the Scary Movie franchise in 2026.
A recent UCLA study revealed that interest in animated content among Gen Z viewers increased from 42% to nearly 49% over the past year. This trend aligns with Miramax’s plans to expand its animation portfolio through the “Monster Mash” adaptation.
