Mia Goth, Zach Galifianakis, and Dan Stevens have been cast in the upcoming revenge comedy, Hey Bear, directed by Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel. Goth will star as the protagonist, Claire, while Stevens plays her husband, Gregory. Zach Galifianakis will portray Putt, a park ranger.

Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films, expressed enthusiasm about the project, saying, “There is nothing more thrilling than discovering a project that pushes boundaries through its originality. Despite the absurdity of the story’s premise, audiences will deeply connect with Claire’s journey as she navigates grief and reclaiming her life.” She added, “Mia Goth, Dan Stevens, and Zach Galifianakis form the perfect team to make us laugh, feel, and gasp in shock and horror.”

According to Variety, Krisel will make his feature directorial debut with Hey Bear. The offbeat comedy is written by Emmy Award winner Carrie Kemper (Beef), with Alix Madigan serving as a producer. Kemper and Danica Radovanov are executive producers. The film will be showcased to buyers at AFM, with HanWay Films handling international sales.

The story follows Claire, a woman who has always lived according to others’ expectations. Married to Gregory, she supports his passion for studying bears in Glacier National Park, often being separated for months. During one visit, Gregory is mauled to death by a grizzly bear named Mr. Cranky, whom Gregory nicknames. After being told the bear was euthanized, Claire discovers that Mr. Cranky was simply relocated to another park and is thriving. Driven by grief and anger, Claire decides to take revenge on the bear. She teams up with Putt, a socially awkward park ranger, who has his own hidden motives for joining her. As danger and truth unfold in the wilderness, Claire embarks on a darkly comedic journey of empowerment and self-discovery. Set against stunning natural scenery, this “coming of rage” story promises a wild ride full of surprises and originality.
