Netflix and A24 are collaborating to develop an unscripted television adaptation of Overcooked, based on the popular video game by Team17. Originally launched in 2016, Overcooked is a cooking simulation game where players team up as chefs to prepare, cook, and serve meals within a limited time, all while navigating kitchens filled with obstacles and hazards.
According to Deadline, the adaptation will be a competition reality series with a similar tone to Netflix’s family-friendly shows like Nailed It! and Floor Is Lava. The project is still in its early development stages. It will be executive-produced by Gemma Langford, Oli De-Vine, and Phil Duncan from Ghost Town Games, along with A24.
Since its release, the game has received critical acclaim, winning two awards at the British Academy Games Awards for Best British Game and Best Family Game. Its success led to a sequel in 2018, and in 2020, Ghost Town Games released a remastered version titled Overcooked: All You Can Eat.
The official description of the game highlights its cooperative gameplay: “Overcooked is a co-op cooking game for 1-4 players. Working as a team, you and your fellow chefs must prepare, cook, and serve a variety of tasty orders before the customers grow impatient. Embark on an epic journey across the Onion Kingdom and face increasingly challenging and bizarre kitchens that test your cooperation and coordination to the limit.”
