Renée Zellweger has signed on to star in the upcoming psychological thriller Phantom Son. The film is directed by British filmmaker David Yates, renowned for helming several movies in the Harry Potter series.
This role marks Zellweger’s return to non-comedy films after her 2019 Oscar-winning performance in the biopic Judy. Most recently, she reprised her iconic role as Bridget Jones in the sequel Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. She also appeared in the latest season of Only Murders in the Building, playing billionaire Camila White.
Phantom Son centers on Ronnie, a young runaway struggling to survive on the streets, who is taken in by Audrey—played by Zellweger—a lonely woman haunted by her past. Her own son was kidnapped twenty years earlier. As Audrey becomes convinced that Ronnie is her long-lost son, a tense and twisted game of deception and delusion unfolds, blurring reality.
The film will be directed by David Yates, with a screenplay by Ian Scott McCullough. Zellweger not only stars in the project but also helped develop it alongside Carmella Casinelli through their Big Picture Co. production company. The project is co-produced and financed by AGC Studios, with production scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
Zellweger and Casinelli expressed their excitement about the project, stating, “Phantom Son is a rare discovery with the potential to resonate widely through its rich, character-driven storytelling. With David Yates at the helm and AGC as our partner, we’re confident in delivering something truly special.”
