Netflix has officially announced that Michelle Monaghan, a Golden Globe nominee known for her role in True Detective, will star in the lead role in Shawn Levy’s upcoming TV series about a high school ice hockey team.

This marks Monaghan’s latest project with Netflix, following her appearance in the 2022 miniseries Echoes. She also recently played a role in the latest season of HBO’s The White Lotus, set in Thailand. Currently, she is set to reprise her role as Jessica Morgan in The Family Plan 2, an upcoming film starring Mark Wahlberg.

The series is set in the small, working-class town of South Dorothy, Minnesota. It follows a high school hockey team that has a long history of winning state championships and producing NHL stars, all under the guidance of their legendary coach, Sully Sullivan. After a tragic bus crash claims the lives of several players and Coach Sully himself, the town turns to Harper Sullivan — Sully’s widow — to coach a new, battered team of young men. The story explores their journey as they unite, transform their grief into resilience, and ultimately inspire their community, turning their adversity into an unstoppable force.

This untitled eight-episode hockey drama is created by Nick Naveda (My Lovely Wife in the Psych Ward) and showrunner Bridget Bedard (Ramy, Transparent). Executive producers include Shawn Levy, Dan Levine (All the Light We Cannot See), Robert Atwood (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), alongside Bedard and director Trey Edward Shults. Moera Ainai (The Perfect Couple) is also serving as a producer.

Shawn Levy expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This show has long been a 21 Laps favorite and one of the best pieces we’ve had the privilege to develop and support. Nick and Bridget have crafted a world and ensemble of characters grounded in authenticity and heartfelt emotion, which naturally attracted talented collaborators like director Trey Edward Shults and lead Michelle Monaghan. With its visceral sports backdrop and deeply human story, we can’t wait to share this series with a global audience.”
