A Movie Based on Labubu Dolls In Development At Sony Pictures

Sony Pictures is reportedly in the early stages of developing a film based on the popular Labubu monster dolls, aiming to bring the beloved collectible franchise to the big screen. The studio has acquired the rights to the brand and has begun initial development, though specific details about the creative team and the film’s format have not yet been revealed. This move marks Sony’s latest effort to adapt a toy line into a movie, following a trend of toy-to-film projects.

Currently, the project is still in its infancy, with no writers, directors, or production plans officially announced. The film could potentially be made as either a live-action or animated feature, depending on the direction the studio chooses, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Labubu first appeared in 2015, created by artist Kasing Lung as part of a series called The Monsters. The dolls were initially produced by How2Work, until Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over manufacturing in 2019. Pop Mart adopted the blind-box sales model, where customers purchase mystery packages without knowing which figure they’ll receive, a strategy that boosted demand and fueled a robust resale market. Limited edition versions of Labubu dolls have become particularly valuable, with some selling for astronomical prices.

The brand quickly gained popularity across East and Southeast Asia, eventually reaching broader markets including the United States. Its visibility soared further when celebrities, notably Blackpink’s Lisa, began wearing the dolls as fashion accessories. Pop Mart’s financial reports for 2024 and early 2025 indicate significant revenue growth driven by the Labubu line. Sony has not issued an official statement regarding the acquisition, and further details about the film’s development are expected as the studio moves forward with its creative plans.
