Wicked 3 Might Be in the Works
Wicked, the popular stage musical created by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, first premiered in 2003. Loosely inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, the story offers a new perspective on L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was famously adapted into the 1939 film starring Judy Garland.
Now, director Jon M. Chu and Universal Pictures have brought Wicked to the big screen, turning it into a film franchise. The first movie was released last year, and this week saw the debut of Wicked: For Good, featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprising their roles as Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland. Holzman co-wrote the screenplay for the film alongside Dana Fox, while Schwartz continues to serve as composer, lyricist, and executive producer.
In an interview with The Ankler, Schwartz revealed that he and Holzman are already working on a new project set within the Oz universe. “What I can share without giving too much away is that Winnie Holzman and I are currently exploring ideas that aren’t a direct sequel to Wicked,” Schwartz explained. “While the story of Glinda and Elphaba feels complete, there are other aspects of the Oz world that could be explored.” He added, “Gregory Maguire has written several other books about Oz, and Winnie and I are discussing an idea that’s not a sequel, but more of an adjunct—something that complements the existing story.”
Details about this new project remain scarce, as it appears to still be in early development.
Wicked: For Good is now playing in theaters across the United States. The cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible.
