‘Far Cry’ TV Adaptation In Development

FX has officially greenlit a live-action television adaptation of the hit Far Cry video game franchise. The network has ordered the project to series, with the show set to be led by Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley.

The adaptation is being developed as a limited anthology, with each season unfolding in a new location, telling a new story, and featuring an entirely fresh cast. The structure mirrors the format of the Far Cry games, which reinvent their worlds and characters with every entry.

The series hails from Hawley and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator Rob McElhenney, who will also appear in the show. It is slated to stream on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ for international audiences.

Hawley explained the creative draw of the project, noting, “What I love about the Far Cry franchise is its anthology nature. Each game explores a variation on a theme, much like each season of Fargo does.” He added that crafting an action-driven series that evolves its story every year while delving into deeper ideas is “a dream come true,” per Deadline.

FX Entertainment President Nick Grad praised the network’s history with both Hawley and McElhenney. “We’ve had incredible partnerships with Rob and Noah across six series and 32 seasons of television. We’re thrilled they’re joining forces for Far Cry,” he said. Grad thanked Ubisoft for trusting FX with the property and expressed confidence that the adaptation will be “original, gripping, and wildly entertaining.”

Since its launch in 2004, Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise has attracted over 100 million unique players. Known for its expansive open-world settings, first-person gameplay, and self-contained narratives, the series’ most recent entry—Far Cry 6 (2021)—featured Giancarlo Esposito as dictator Antón Castillo.
