HBO has unveiled the title and debut window for its highly anticipated comedy series starring Steve Carell: Rooster. The 10-episode first season will launch on HBO in March 2026, with episodes available to stream on Max shortly after airing, following the network’s standard rollout.
Created and co-showrun by Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso) and Matt Tarses (Scrubs), the series marks Lawrence’s latest venture following the 2024 Apple TV+ hit Bad Monkey, which is gearing up for Season 2. Ted Lasso, another Lawrence staple, is also in the works for a potential fourth season. Carell, who also executive produces, leads a stellar ensemble including Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of a college campus, Rooster explores an author’s (Carell) thorny, heartfelt dynamic with his grown daughter (Clive), as he grapples with reinvention amid the chaos of academia and family ties. Co-showrunners Lawrence and Tarses, drawing from their Scrubs playbook, promise a blend of sharp wit and emotional depth—think physical comedy laced with poignant father-daughter reckonings.
Executive producers also include Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer for Lawrence’s Doozer, alongside Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, and Anthony King. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Rooster reunites Carell with McGinley, a Scrubs vet, for what could be his funniest straight comedy role since The Office.
