As the dust settles on the finale of Stranger Things Season 5, creators Matt and Ross Duffer are already teasing a new spin-off. They recently shared some intriguing, though somewhat cryptic, details about the project while firmly dismissing one popular fan theory regarding its setting.
When asked by Deadline if the finale contained any hints about the upcoming spin-off, Ross Duffer acknowledged fans’ curiosity but quickly clarified misconceptions. “It’s not Hopper mentioning Montauk. There’s no Montauk spin-off,” he stated.
Ross explained that the reference was intentional but meant to be symbolic. “That was more of a wink to the fans—those who know that the show originally started as a story about Montauk,” he said, emphasizing that it shouldn’t be interpreted as hinting at a specific storyline. He also dismissed the idea of familiar characters, like Holly or the kids, leading the new project, clarifying, “It’s obviously not Holly and the kids or anything like that.”
Instead, Ross described the spin-off as a much more contained project. “It’s something much smaller than that,” he explained. “It’s still early days, but it’s an entirely new mythology.” While the new series will remain connected to the Stranger Things universe, Ross made it clear that it will stand on its own. “It has its own story and its own mythology,” he added.
Matt Duffer echoed these sentiments to Variety, especially when asked about the mysterious rock seen in the finale. He admitted, “Spinoffy, yeah. You pinned us down,” and revealed that the series will directly explore that element. “The spinoff will delve into that and explain it, so viewers will understand it,” he said. He also noted that it won’t be a deep dive into the Mind Flayer or similar creatures, but rather a fresh and new story that will address some loose threads.
The Duffers confirmed that development is already underway. “We’re going to start working on it again on Monday,” Ross revealed. So, while Stranger Things has concluded its story in Hawkins, a new spin-off rooted in a different mythology is already in progress.
Though co-creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer have made it clear that the upcoming spinoff would focus on new storylines and new characters, there’s still a future ahead for the original series’ universe. Set to hit Netflix screens in 2026, Showrunner Eric Robles‘s new animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 is set between the second and third seasons and will feature a number of familiar faces facing previously unimaginable threats.
