Fans of classic comedy-horror films have a lot to look forward to in 2026, as a fresh take on the beloved 1989 film The ‘Burbs is set to hit streaming screens. A newly released trailer offers a glimpse into the upcoming series, promising to blend modern suburban suspense with the humor that made the original a cult favorite. Directed by Joe Dante, The ‘Burbs stars Tom Hanks as Ray Peterson, a suburbanite who becomes increasingly suspicious of his odd new neighbors. The film also features Bruce Dern as Mark Rumsfeld, Carrie Fisher as Carol Peterson, and Corey Feldman as Ricky Butler. The story unfolds as Ray, convinced that something sinister is happening behind the quiet suburban façade, begins to investigate, leading to humorous and suspenseful situations. The film’s blend of comedy, mystery, and suburban satire has kept it a cult favorite for decades. Available for rent or purchase on streaming platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV, The ‘Burbs remains a nostalgic favorite among fans of 80s cinema.
In September 2024, it was announced that The ‘Burbs is being revived as a television series for Peacock, bringing the story into the modern era. The show is created by Celeste Hughey and is set to premiere next month, on Sunday, February 8, 2026. This new adaptation promises to explore contemporary suburban life with a fresh perspective, while maintaining the mystery and humor that defined the original.
The official synopsis states that the series “follows a young couple who have reluctantly relocated to the husband’s childhood home. Their world is upended when a new neighbor moves in across the street, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.” Set in today’s suburbia, the series aims to blend suspense, comedy, and thriller elements into a compelling new narrative.
The series boasts an impressive cast and creative team, including Keke Palmer, who also serves as an executive producer. Palmer’s involvement adds star power and a contemporary edge to the project. The cast also features Jack Whitehall, Julia Duffy, Paula Pell, Mark Proksch, and Kapil Talwalkar.
Rachel Shukert writes and serves as an executive producer, with other notable executive producers including Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Aimee Carlson for Fuzzy Door; Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner, and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment; and Nzingha Stewart, who also directs the series. Dana Olse is credited as a co-executive producer.
