A controversial Daniel Craig film is being transformed into a television series. According to Variety, Sky has ordered an adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for TV.
The series will be written and executive-produced by Steve Lightfoot (Spider-Noir) and Angela LaManna (The Haunting of Bly Manor). Additional executive producers include Andy Harries, Charlotte Moore, John Phillips, Sam Hoyle, Amy Pascal, and Scott Rudin. The show will consist of eight episodes and is produced by Left Bank Pictures as a Sky Original series.
Based on Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follows Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced journalist who is hired by a wealthy CEO to investigate the disappearance of his niece, which occurred 40 years earlier. During the investigation, Blomkvist teams up with Lisbeth Salander, a mysterious and talented tech genius. The official description states that the series will update the story to the present day, maintaining the core characters and investigative spirit of Larsson’s Millennium series while highlighting themes that are highly relevant today.
Filming is scheduled to begin in Lithuania this spring. The series will air on Sky in the UK and across other European markets, with international distribution managed by Sony Pictures Television. While a U.S. broadcaster has not been announced, pre-sale efforts are underway.
The story has previously been adapted into film several times. In 2009, the Swedish version starred Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace in the leading roles, along with two sequels: The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.
A 2011 American adaptation directed by David Fincher featured Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander. That version received critical praise and garnered five Oscar nominations, winning for Best Film Editing. However, it also sparked controversy due to its graphic depictions of sexual violence.
Additionally, Amazon had ordered a television adaptation of the novel, but that project never advanced beyond the development stage.
