Update On Mike Flanagan’s Highly Anticipated ‘The Exorcist’ Reboot

Scarlett Johansson and filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s highly anticipated The Exorcist reboot has officially locked in a theatrical release date, signaling major forward momentum for the reimagining of the iconic horror franchise.

Universal has announced that Flanagan’s untitled The Exorcist film will arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027, according to Deadline. The studio shifted the project from its original March 13, 2026 release, pushing it back one year following recent production and scheduling adjustments. Flanagan is set to write, direct, and produce the film, which stars Scarlett Johansson alongside Jacobi Jupe.

Described by Universal as a “radical redo,” the reboot will exist entirely separate from 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which earned $136.2 million at the global box office. The studio has confirmed that the new film will tell a completely original story and will not connect to any previous entries in the franchise. Blumhouse reaffirmed Flanagan’s full creative commitment to the project in May 2024.

Universal, Peacock, and Blumhouse acquired the rights to The Exorcist franchise from Morgan Creek in 2021 in a deal reportedly valued at approximately $400 million. The agreement outlined plans for a new trilogy, beginning with Believer and continuing with Flanagan’s standalone reboot, which is not positioned as a direct sequel. The film is slated for release during the 2027 spring break window, where it will face minimal competition, sharing its opening weekend only with Sony’s animated feature Buds.

Flanagan’s résumé includes acclaimed projects such as Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. He has a long-standing creative relationship with Blumhouse, having previously collaborated on Oculus, Hush, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. The upcoming Exorcist reboot marks the latest chapter in that partnership.

The film is being produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment in association with Red Room Pictures. Producers include Jason Blum, Mike Flanagan, and David Robinson, with Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers.
