Comedian and actress Chelsea Handler has signed on to star as the lead in Hulu’s upcoming comedy series, Townhouse. This marks Handler’s first major scripted TV role since a guest appearance in Will & Grace in 2019 and a cameo in Not Dead Yet in 2024. According to Deadline, Townhouse is being developed by rising writer Zoe Young and 20th Television. Notably, this will be Young’s first TV writing credit following her graduation from USC’s MFA program in Writing for Screen & Television in 2025. Aside from starring, Handler will also serve as an executive producer. The project, however, has not yet received an official series order from Hulu.
The series’ premise, as described in the initial logline, centers on a reality star and her group of misfit companions as they work to repair her tarnished image and revive her career. When her estranged daughter unexpectedly moves into their deteriorating Manhattan townhouse, the aging TV star is faced with the one role she’s been avoiding her entire life: motherhood.
Handler is no stranger to reality TV, having previously executive-produced Pretty Wild on E!, which followed Alexis Neiers of the Bling Ring. She has hosted and starred in numerous talk shows and specials since 2007, including Chelsea Lately, Uganda Be Kidding Me: Live, Chelsea, Chelsea Handler: Evolution, Chelsea Handler: Revolution, and Chelsea Handler: The Feeling. In 2012, she also executive-produced an NBC sitcom based on her best-selling book Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea. The series, led by Laura Prepon, lasted only one season.
