First Details Emerge for Netflix Monopoly TV Show and Future Film Adaptations

The highly anticipated Monopoly TV series for Netflix has begun to reveal its initial details, offering fans a glimpse of what to expect from the adaptation of the classic board game. According to a recent report from Deadline, Studio Lambert has secured the rights to produce the show. Known for creating Peacock’s popular game show The Traitors, Studio Lambert will be responsible for bringing the Monopoly series to life on Netflix. The platform was reportedly impressed with the studio’s innovative pitch, choosing them over several other contenders.

Although specific details about the show remain scarce, Netflix VP of Unscripted Series Jeff Gaspin shared some insight with Deadline. He explained that the decision to acquire the rights was influenced by the success of the mobile game Monopoly Go! launched in 2023. Gaspin mentioned, “There’s a gameplay element in Monopoly Go! that I think will really resonate in an unscripted series.” However, what form the gameplay will take in the show has not yet been revealed, leaving fans eager for more information.

In addition to the TV series, Monopoly is set to make a splash in theaters in the near future. Lionsgate is reportedly moving forward with a Monopoly movie slated for 2024. Margot Robbie is said to be attached to the project, taking on a producer role alongside Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara.

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has attempted to adapt Monopoly into a film. In 2008, Universal Pictures aimed to develop a movie with Ridley Scott attached to direct, but the project was ultimately shelved when the rights reverted to Hasbro. Similarly, in 2015, Lionsgate announced plans for an action-adventure film based on the game, with screenwriter Andrew Niccol involved. That project was abandoned, with no further updates.

Most recently, in 2019, Kevin Hart was reported to be involved in leading and producing an untitled Monopoly film. It remains unclear whether Hart is still connected to the project or if the upcoming Lionsgate-Hasbro adaptation will be a new version altogether.
