Jake Gyllenhaal Joins New Amazon MGM Sports Film “Play by Play”

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has signed on to star in a new sports-themed movie titled Play by Play, produced by Amazon MGM Studios. This announcement follows Gyllenhaal’s recent role in the remake of Roadhouse, which he starred in as Elwood Dalton and was released on Prime Video earlier this year. A sequel to Roadhouse is currently in development, with Gyllenhaal set to reprise his role; however, the film’s director will be changing from Doug Liman to Ilya Naishuller.

According to Deadline, Gyllenhaal is collaborating with Amazon MGM Studios on Play by Play, a project penned by Chris McCoy. McCoy, who previously did rewrites for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has an extensive writing background, having contributed to Disney, Fox, DreamWorks, Paramount, and Laika productions.

While plot details remain under wraps, it is known that Gyllenhaal will serve as a producer through his Nine Stories banner. The film’s production team also includes Josh McLaughlin, Gotham Chopra, and Tom Brady from Religion of Sports. A release date for Play by Play has not yet been announced.

In addition to his work on the Roadhouse remake, Gyllenhaal is also starring in The Bride!, which opens in U.S. theaters this weekend. Directed by his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film features performances by Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.

Beyond these projects, Gyllenhaal has several other collaborations in the pipeline. He is involved in Honeymoon with Harry, a dramedy for Prime Video where he will star opposite Kevin Costner, and Code Black, a political thriller based on a short story by Harrison Query, which is currently in development.

Meanwhile, Chris McCoy recently sold a spec script titled Hit the Gas to Paramount Pictures. Described as a “propulsive thriller,” further details about the project have not been disclosed. Neal Moritz of Sonic the Hedgehog fame is producing this film.
