The Review: ‘GOAT’ – Hoops, Heart, and Horns

Sony Pictures Animation’s GOAT is full of energy with fast-break dunks, and blending high-flying sports action with a heartfelt underdog tale set in a vibrant animal kingdom. Directed by Tyree Dillihay, the film follows Will, a pint-sized goat voiced by Caleb McLaughlin, who dreams of stardom in the brutal world of roarball – a basketball-inspired game where beasts like rhinos and horses dominate the court. Idolizing the legendary panther player Jett (Gabrielle Union), Will gets an unexpected shot at glory when he’s scouted for her struggling team, the Vineland Thorns. What ensues is a familiar yet charming journey of self-discovery, teamwork, and defying expectations.

The film’s world-building is a standout, painting Vineland as a lush, semi-dystopian metropolis where vines reclaim urban decay, and street courts pulse with raw athleticism. Sony’s animation team delivers a bold aesthetic that mixes painterly backgrounds with dynamic, fluid action sequences.

Voice acting anchors the story, with McLaughlin infusing Will with wide-eyed optimism and quiet determination. At its heart, GOAT champions themes of perseverance and non-conformity, urging viewers – especially young ones – to chase dreams regardless of size or odds. Will’s transformation from self-doubting fan to confident player underscores that true greatness comes from within, not physical prowess. The film cleverly plays on the “GOAT” acronym (Greatest of All Time) to explore idol worship and the pressure of legacy, adding layers for adult audiences amid the kid-friendly antics.

Overall, GOAT is a worthy addition to the animated sports genre, blending spectacle, laughs, and life lessons into a package that’s fun for all. If you’re seeking a feel-good adventure that celebrates resilience, this one’s a slam dunk.
