Idris Elba was recently spotted on the streets of London, marking the start of filming for the highly anticipated sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun. Leaked set photos and videos offer the first intense glimpse of the new project, which is currently shooting across various locations in the UK. The visuals showcase a darker, more gritty return for the troubled detective. Unlike the snowy landscapes of Iceland seen in the first film’s finale, the new scenes are set amid London’s iconic atmosphere.
One of the most eye-catching shots, shared by What’s on Netflix, features Elba’s character fleeing from a massive car explosion outside St. Paul’s Cathedral. To capture an authentic British vibe, the crew used artificial rain to soak the streets, while stunt performers handled the high-stakes action. The production team has been actively filming around London; on February 18, crew members were seen in North London near Parkland Walk and Crouch End, shooting a tense bike chase scene during the night.
According to Netflix, the story will see Luther returning to a city under siege. When a series of brutal, seemingly random murders begin plaguing London, the detective is secretly pulled back into action. This time, the stakes are higher: Luther must stop the killer while avoiding threats from all directions, as it appears everyone wants him dead.
The sequel also brings back familiar faces from the franchise. Idris Elba is joined by Dermot Crowley as Martin Schenk and Ruth Wilson reprising her role as the sharp and dangerous Alice Morgan. New cast members include Stephen Dillane, Anya Chalotra, Kyle Soller, Ian Hart, and Niamh Algar. With filming expected to conclude by May 2026, post-production is in full swing, suggesting that fans may have to wait until early or mid-2027 before they can stream Luther 2 on Netflix.
