Universal Pictures has announced that the highly anticipated film adaptation of Murder, She Wrote will hit theaters on December 22, 2027. The upcoming movie stars Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis and is based on the beloved crime TV series created by Angela Lansbury, which aired for twelve seasons from 1984 to 1996.
Scheduled to compete at the box office with Sony Pictures’ animated feature Buds, the film will also premiere alongside high-profile releases such as Nancy Meyers’ star-studded untitled comedy, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and Avengers: Secret Wars, all debuting in the same month.
Directed by Jason Moore, the Murder, She Wrote remake features a screenplay by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo. Curtis is currently the only confirmed cast member. The project is produced by Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Aditya Sood, and will be part of Lord Miller’s first-look deal with Universal Pictures. Further details about the plot and characters remain under wraps.
The original series was created by Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson, and William Link. It followed Jessica Fletcher, played by Lansbury, a retired teacher and mystery novelist who becomes an amateur detective. Lansbury’s portrayal earned her four Golden Globe awards for Best Actress in a TV series. The show also featured recurring performances by Tom Bosley, William Windom, Ron Masak, Will Nye, and Louis Herthum.
