Glen Powell and Judd Apatow’s upcoming comedy film has officially been titled and received its first look. The movie, called The Comeback King, centers on “a country western star in free fall,” though additional details remain scarce. The film also stars Cristin Milioti, Madelyn Cline, Stavros Halkias, and Li Jin Hao.
Apatow will serve as director, with both he and Powell co-writing the screenplay. The project will be produced by Apatow through his Apatow Productions banner, alongside Powell and Dan Cohen for Barnstorm. Erik Baiers, Universal’s senior executive VP of Production, will oversee the film’s production for the studio.
This project is likely to be Apatow’s next after his current work co-directing a two-part HBO documentary about Mel Brooks with Michael Bonfiglio. His recent directing credits include the documentaries Bob and Done: A Love Story, about the friendship between Bob Newhart and Don Rickles, and George Carlin’s American Dream. He also directed the 2022 Netflix comedy The Bubble and the 2020 film The King of Staten Island.
For Powell, The Comeback King marks another significant project in his rising career. Since 2024, he has starred in several high-profile films such as Twisters, The Running Man, How to Make a Killing, and most recently, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. His upcoming role will be in J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi fantasy film The Great Beyond.
