Sometimes, a self-assured person just needs to step back and listen. That’s the central theme of Teddy Swims’ latest track, “Mr. Know It All,” which is released just in time for his mainstage appearance at Coachella this weekend.
“Mr. Know It All” blends a soulful, vintage sound with a richly textured production that demands attention. It marks a new chapter in the career of the American artist, showcasing his evolving artistry. Swims explains that the song “explores the idea that love can become a self-fulfilling contradiction.” He continues, “When you believe you already know how it will end, you hold back to protect yourself, and that distance often causes the failure. But if you try to control every outcome, you can suffocate the connection.”
Digging deeper, Swims describes the song as addressing how fear and control can quietly destroy something genuine. It draws on concepts from Robert K. Merton’s theories of self-fulfilling and self-defeating prophecies, often referred to as “The Prophet’s Dilemma.”
For “Mr. Know It All,” Swims collaborated with co-writers and producers Julian Bunetta, Ammo, and John Ryan, with additional songwriting from Eskeerdo and first-time contributor Ed Drewett.
