People have the exclusive first look at Paramount’s upcoming film, Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story, starring David Corenswet, Michael Shannon, and Isabel May. Corenswet describes the film’s core question as, “What happens when a person who has defined himself by optimism and resilience faces a losing battle?” He adds, “Can grace, dignity, humor, and love turn failure into a kind of success? These are the questions I believe John’s story prompts—and questions we all encounter at different points in life. I love the reminder to smile at the person in front of me, or even to myself, and to marvel at the beauty of the moment. John served as that kind of reminder for many people.”

Director Jonathan Levine shared insights about the film, noting, “John Tuggle’s true story was filled with triumph, laughter, romance, and heartache.” He emphasized the importance of casting the right actor, saying, “Depicting John required someone who could embody all those qualities—someone charming, charismatic, and with an infectious good nature, but also capable of portraying his journey with depth and truth.” Levine added, “Corenswet is truly the only person I could imagine playing John.” The film aims to resonate deeply with audiences by telling the inspiring story of John Tuggle, a former New York Giants draft pick who made a lasting impact on the team. Legendary Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells, who led the Giants during Tuggle’s tenure, played a significant role in his story. Parcells, considered one of the greatest coaches of his era, guided the team to two Super Bowl victories and supported Tuggle’s rise.

The term Mr. Irrelevant originated in 1976, when USC receiver Paul Salata was selected in the NFL Draft, sparking what became known as Irrelevant Week. While the name might sound derogatory, recent stars like Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers have helped shift perceptions. Tuggle’s story is widely admired in the football community, celebrated for its emotional depth and the awe it inspires. His journey creates a perfect emotional backdrop for a sports-themed tearjerker, setting Corenswet up for a compelling leading role.
Mr. Irrelevant is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 25.
