Peter Heller’s novel, The Dog Stars, is set to be adapted into a film directed by the prolific Ridley Scott. This post-apocalyptic story promises to offer a fresh perspective, exploring more than just survival in a hopeless world. It delves into the existential question of “why bother?”

According to Esquire, Scott comments on the genre, saying, “I think there’ve been quite a few apocalyptic movies. My earlier work, like Blade Runner, was incredibly bleak. But I’m pleased that this new film carries a strong sense of hope. ‘It’ll be okay.’ If you do the right thing, it reminds us that ‘God helps those who help themselves.’”

Esquire has also released the first images from the upcoming film. The cast includes Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong. After finishing production, Ridley Scott expressed high praise, suggesting it could be his best work yet.
“The one I just finished, The Dog Stars, shot in just 34 days,” he shared. “It’s as quick as a TV series, but I believe it might be my best movie. Every project is a journey of self-discovery and choice, especially when selecting actors. I always review their previous work before casting. I cast Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, and Josh Brolin—actors I often find myself fortunate to work with, if they’re available.”

“Set in a near future after an unnamed pandemic has decimated American society, the story follows Hig (Elordi), a civilian pilot living a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a tough ex-marine (Brolin). The two men couldn’t be more mismatched but depend on each other to fend off roaming invaders. When a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside the pilot that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail”, reads the plot description.
