“Heart Eyes 2” Set for February 2028 Release: A Romantic Slasher Sequel on the Horizon

The Valentine’s Day slasher film franchise is making a chilling return with a highly anticipated second installment. Following the success of the first movie, which managed to turn a profit on a modest budget, fans now have a confirmed release date for the sequel. “Heart Eyes 2” is scheduled to hit theaters on February 11, 2028—just days before Valentine’s Day, perfect for the holiday-themed horror.

Josh Ruben is back to direct the sequel and will co-write the screenplay alongside Darcy Fowler. The story is being developed by Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy, according to Variety.

The original “Heart Eyes” starred Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding as coworkers who become mistaken for lovers by a serial killer targeting couples on Valentine’s Day. The cast also featured Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Devon Sawa, and Jordana Brewster. It remains uncertain who will reprise their roles in the upcoming film, and plot details have yet to be revealed.

In an earlier interview with Variety, Ruben shared insights into the franchise’s potential. He explained, “You could replicate the structure of any great rom-com, from His Girl Friday to Defending Your Life, and you could drop Heart Eyes into the center of that story, with the killer flashing and slashing about.” Ruben also mentioned that the sequel could evoke the feelings of beloved films like Bridget Jones or Love Actually, while featuring characters “terrified by this psychopathic killer.”

Paramount Pictures has stepped in to co-produce and co-finance “Heart Eyes 2,” alongside Spyglass Media. Landon and Divide/Conquer are also serving as producers. Notably, there’s been a shift in distribution from Sony Pictures, which handled the original film released in 2025. The first “Heart Eyes” performed well, grossing $33 million worldwide against an $18 million production budget, demonstrating enough commercial appeal to justify a sequel for the holiday-obsessed killer.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer for the first trailer, which will offer a sneak peek at what’s to come in “Heart Eyes 2.”
