Paramount Pictures has announced the release date for one of the most highly awaited horror sequels in recent memory. The studio confirmed that Longlegs 2 will hit theaters sooner than many anticipated, transforming what was initially a surprise announcement into a key entry in a growing franchise. The sequel is set for release on January 14, 2028, and will see the return of both director Osgood Perkins and star Nicolas Cage, who reprise their roles in the dark universe they helped create.
Unlike a direct sequel, Paramount describes Longlegs 2 as a story set within the broader Longlegs universe, allowing for a flexible and open-ended narrative. Perkins will once again write and direct the film, with Cage returning to reprise his role, adding further excitement for fans eager to see how the story unfolds.
The project marks a significant shift for the franchise. The original film, distributed by Neon, was a surprise hit, grossing approximately $128 million globally on a modest budget of under $10 million. However, with Longlegs 2, Neon stepped aside after reportedly deeming the new project’s budget beyond its typical scope. Paramount then acquired the rights, signaling a major commitment to horror as a key genre for the studio.
The 2024 original Longlegs film starred Maika Monroe as an FBI agent investigating a series of murder-suicides linked to a serial killer named Longlegs, played by Nicolas Cage. The film’s R-rating, combined with a strategic marketing campaign by Neon, turned it into a word-of-mouth phenomenon, elevating Perkins’s profile as a prominent horror director almost overnight.
The upcoming sequel is produced by a team including Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Osgood Perkins, Chris Ferguson, Dave Caplan, and Nicolas Cage, who will also serve as a producer alongside starring in the film. With the release date set and the creative team in place, anticipation is high for the next chapter in the Longlegs universe.
