Gerard Butler is gearing up for a high-stakes role in an upcoming action film where he will race against the clock to save 70,000 fans at the world’s largest sporting event, the World Cup.
Produced by Thunder Road, the studio behind the John Wick series, the film will see Butler portray a sharpshooter tasked with protecting innocent lives at all costs. Titled The Nest, the movie follows his character as he responds to a mysterious radio threat, embarking on a tense mission to prevent catastrophe, according to Deadline.
The screenplay is penned by Aaron Benjamin, known for his short stories and for writing Maverick, a biopic about John McCain’s time as a prisoner of war. The film’s producing team includes Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road, Gerard Butler himself, Alan Siegel of G-BASE (known for Den of Thieves), and Steve Klinsky of Untravelled Worlds (Manhattan Night). Jon Hersh and Mahal Sourgose are serving as executive producers. Production is slated to begin in early 2027, though a director has yet to be announced.
Gerard Butler has solidified his reputation as a dependable action star over the past decade, starring in successful franchises like Has Fallen, Greenland, Den of Thieves, and How to Train Your Dragon. Most recently, he appeared in Lionsgate’s Greenland 2: Migration, an emotional action thriller directed by Ric Roman Waugh, which was released in theaters in January 2026. The film features Morena Baccarin and Roman Griffin Davis reprising their roles from the 2020 hit Greenland.
Additional cast members include Amber Rose Revah as Dr. Amina, Peter Polycarpou as Dr. Haugen, William Abadie as Denis Laurent, along with Tommie Earl Jenkins, Nelia Valery Da Costa, and Trond Fausa Aurvåg, who play pivotal roles. The movie is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
