Patrick Schwarzenegger and Phoebe Dynevor have officially begun filming the adaptation of Beach Read. A behind-the-scenes photo offers fans an early glimpse of their characters. Following the success of People We Meet on Vacation, another Emily Henry bestseller is heading to the big screen. Production is now in progress, and the creative team has shared a sneak peek of what’s to come.
Filming has kicked off in Toronto, with director Yulin Kuang marking the milestone by posting a behind-the-scenes shot from a camera test. Alongside the image, she wrote, “A crumb of BTS from the BEACH READ camera test for you, dear reader. Can’t wait to show what we’ve been cooking up.”
The photo provides the first look at the leads as January Andrews and Augustus “Gus” Everett. Dynevor appears with a short red hairstyle, wearing a yellow cardigan over a white top, accessorized with a gold locket necklace. Schwarzenegger sports longer hair and a laid-back outfit, featuring a navy tank top and an open short-sleeve shirt, complemented by a chain necklace.
Based on Emily Henry’s 2020 bestseller, Beach Read centers on two writers who are stuck in creative slumps. January writes romance novels, while Gus is known for more serious literary fiction. When they end up as neighbors for the summer, they make a playful bet: to swap genres and see who can succeed. However, things quickly become more complicated as their challenge begins to turn into something more meaningful (via People).
Dynevor signed on earlier this year, with Schwarzenegger joining the cast in April. Yulin Kuang, who previously adapted People We Meet on Vacation, is directing the film.
In the same social media post, Kuang announced that filming has officially started, joking, “see you only in theaters on May 7, 2027.”
The cast also includes Kevin Bacon, Andie MacDowell, Tig Notaro, and Kristin Davis, though details about their roles remain under wraps, fueling further anticipation among fans.
