Emma Roberts is set to reprise an iconic role from a beloved teen movie in an unexpected new project. Disney+ has ordered a pilot episode for a television adaptation of the 2006 film Aquamarine, directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, according to Deadline. Roberts will guest star as Claire Brown and serve as an executive producer alongside Rosenbaum and producer Susan Cartsonis.

The upcoming series will follow a teenage girl named Coral, who moves to a picturesque seaside town to uncover the truth behind her mother’s mysterious disappearance. As Coral delves into her past, she learns that her mother was once a mermaid, awakening magical powers within herself. Secrets lurking beneath the waves threaten to come to light, setting the stage for a mystical adventure.

Sarah Watson, known for her work on Disney+’s Percy Jackson series, Parenthood, and The Bold Type, is writing the pilot episode. The original Aquamarine movie, released in 2006, starred Roberts and JoJo Levesque during summer vacation, when they discover a mermaid on the beach played by Sara Paxton. The trio embarks on a quest to prove that true love exists within three days. Based on Alice Hoffman’s 2001 young adult novel of the same name, the film has become a cult classic despite mixed initial reviews. It grossed nearly $23 million worldwide and marked Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum’s feature film debut before she went on to direct movies like Ramona and Beezus, Careful What You Wish For, Sneakerella, and Purple Hearts.

As of now, Disney+ has not announced a release date for the Aquamarine series.
