Lionsgate has unveiled a new trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. This highly anticipated prequel spin-off of the popular dystopian franchise is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026.
The official synopsis reveals that the film will explore the world of Panem 24 years before the original series, beginning on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The released video features Joseph Zada in the role of a young Haymitch Abernathy. The character, famously portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the original films, was introduced as the cynical mentor to Katniss and Peeta. The new featurette was released to celebrate Haymitch’s birthday and Reaping Day, showcasing Zada alongside director Francis Lawrence, producer Nina Jacobson, and other cast members. They discuss Harrelson’s legendary portrayal and how it influenced Zada’s performance, hinting at the beginning of Haymitch’s revolutionary spirit in this new story.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is directed by Francis Lawrence, with Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie co-writing the screenplay. The film is based on Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel of the same name. The cast also includes Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Mckenna Grace, Maya Hawke, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Whitney Peak. The production team features Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and Francis Lawrence.
