Liz Meriwether has been tapped to write the screenplay for the film adaptation of Britney Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me. The project is being produced by Wicked producer Marc Platt and directed by Jon M. Chu at Universal Pictures. The studio acquired the rights to the memoir, which became a bestseller, in August 2024, with Platt and Chu attached to the project.

Meriwether is working on the first draft of the script, which chronicles the extraordinary life of Britney Spears, a Mississippi native from McComb who rose to global fame with chart-topping hits like “…Baby One More Time,” “Toxic,” and “Oops…I Did It Again!” The memoir details her journey through fame, personal struggles, and resilience.

The Woman in Me made history as the fastest-selling memoir in Simon & Schuster’s history, selling over 6 million copies worldwide. Britney Spears signed a $15 million book deal in 2022. Her career milestones include winning a Grammy Award, selling nearly 150 million records globally, and generating 70 million albums, singles, and songs sold in the United States alone, according to Nielsen Music.

Meriwether is well-known for creating the hit Fox series New Girl, starring Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone. She also co-created FX’s limited series Dying for Sex, which received Emmy nominations in 2025 for Outstanding Limited Series and writing. Additionally, she created Hulu’s The Dropout, which was nominated in 2022 for Outstanding Limited/Anthology Series and Best Writing.

This highly anticipated project aims to bring Britney Spears’ inspiring story to the big screen, with Meriwether’s acclaimed screenwriting skills guiding the way.
