Atari has entered a strategic partnership with Entertainment 360 and Universal Pictures, securing the rights to adapt ten of its iconic video game properties into feature films. As part of this collaboration, Universal has already acquired the first project—a movie inspired by Atari’s intellectual property, to be produced by Guymon Casady of Entertainment 360, from a screenplay by Matt Reilly and Carl Hampe, both of whom will serve as producers.
Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “For over fifty years, Atari has crafted games and worlds that have become enduring parts of popular culture. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Universal and Entertainment 360 to bring the essence of our legendary brand to a new medium.”
The ten classic properties include beloved titles such as Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, and Yars’ Revenge. The goal is to develop these properties into large-scale action-adventure films that capture the spirit of the original games.
The initiative was sparked by a screenplay initially written by Reilly, a longtime Universal executive who transitioned into screenwriting and producing, and Hampe, a producer known for films like Hellboy and Jungle Cruise. Casady shared his personal connection to Atari games, saying, “Matt Reilly and I grew up playing Atari 2600 games and have been fans ever since. The best Atari games immersed players in a world that sparked imagination. Carl and Matt saw the potential to craft a big, original adventure that captures that same spirit. From the moment we read the screenplay, we believed it could be a great movie.”
