Billie Eilish has undergone a dramatic transformation for her upcoming film role. Starring in Oscar-winning director Sarah Polley’s latest project, the renowned singer has stepped into a completely new character.
Currently filming in Toronto, Eilish is working on Polley’s adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s classic novel, The Bell Jar. Recently, set photos leaked online have generated a lot of excitement among fans. In her role as Esther Greenwood, the singer looks nearly unrecognizable. Notably, she has lost a significant amount of weight for the part. In the photos, she is seen wearing a red, round-neck top paired with a red checkered skirt. This project marks Eilish’s first serious foray into dramatic acting. Previously, she appeared in the 2023 Amazon series Swarm.
Produced by Focus Features, The Bell Jar tells the story of Greenwood, a young woman with a promising future. The novel, published in 1963, explores her struggles with overwhelming stress, societal expectations, and the pressures to succeed. As her mental health deteriorates, Greenwood falls into depression, a state symbolized by the metaphor of the titular bell jar.
The story behind The Bell Jar is also marked by tragedy. Just a month after the book’s initial publication, Sylvia Plath took her own life at age 30. The novel was originally published under Plath’s pen name, Victoria Lucas, but was reissued three years later under her real name following her death.
Alongside Eilish, actors Connor Storrie and Carey Mulligan are also rumored to be part of the cast. Reports suggest Mulligan might play Mrs. Greenwood, while Storrie may portray Buddy Willard. Sarah Polley’s The Bell Jar is slated for release in 2027.
