In an unexpected turn of events, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2013 cult hit Spring Breakers has announced a change in its directorial leadership. Originally set to be helmed by filmmaker Matthew Bright, known for movies like Freeway, Ted Bundy, and Tip Toes, the project now has a new director at the helm: former Disney star Bella Thorne.

Thorne revealed the exciting news during an interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, confirming she will both write and direct the sequel. This marks her second time stepping behind the camera, following her directorial debut with Color Your Hurt.

The actress-turned-filmmaker also hinted that this new installment will take a different tone from the original. “This time, things are different. They are crazy. There’s a lot of craziness, there’s a lot of litness in this movie,” Thorne said, teasing an edgier, more intense narrative.

Titled Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain, the sequel will feature Thorne in a starring role alongside Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin, and True Whitaker. Originally cast as one of the leads, Thorne shared that after the producers viewed her directorial work on Color Your Hurt, they asked her to write a script for the film. She explained, “The producers watched Color Your Hurt, which is the movie I just wrapped, an early cut of it. And they asked me to write something to see if they would like it. And they loved it! And now I’m writing and directing Spring Breakers 2.”

Color Your Hurt is a coming-of-age thriller inspired by Thorne’s 2024 short film Unsettled, which explores the struggles of a young gay man growing up in the Bible Belt. The film wrapped production in late 2025, but a release date has yet to be announced.

Additionally, Thorne revealed that some members of the original Spring Breakers production team are involved in the sequel, including producers Chris Hanle and Jordan Gertner. As for Harmony Korine, who directed the first film, he has expressed disinterest in returning, stating to The Hollywood Reporter that he has “no interest” in making a sequel.

Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain remains in development, with no official release date announced yet.
