Lionsgate has announced that the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic sequel, Michael 2, could premiere as early as late 2027. During the studio’s Thursday earnings call, Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson revealed that filming might commence in late 2026 or early 2027. If production proceeds on schedule, fans could see the sequel in theaters by late 2027 or mid-2028.
The original film, which was released on April 24, 2026, and chronicled the life and rise of the King of Pop, achieved remarkable commercial success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide. This box office triumph made a sequel almost inevitable. The film’s ending, which featured the words “His Story Continues,” was widely interpreted as a clear hint towards a subsequent installment.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the first film starred Jaafar Jackson—Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew—in the titular role. The cast also included Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and supporting performances by Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, and KeiLyn Durrel Jones. However, the film’s final cut was significantly affected by legal complications, particularly regarding the portrayal of molestation allegations. An estate settlement clause prevented certain accusers from being depicted on screen, leading to the removal of key scenes and reshoots.
Details about the plot of Michael 2 remain under wraps, and the legal restrictions introduce uncertainty about its narrative direction. Still, Fogelson suggested that some of the previously cut material might be incorporated into the sequel. Lionsgate has yet to announce an official release date, but the studio is aiming for a theatrical debut in 2027 or 2028.
